Grayscale
This mode uses up to 256 shades of gray. Every pixel of a grayscale image has a brightness value ranging from 0 (black) to 255 (white).

Grayscale
A monochromatic digital image file with pixel values that use shades of gray to represent tonal information. The term grayscale is often used to describe a digital black and white photograph.

Color/Grayscale converts the selected photos to grayscale and back to color.
White balance selector tool (the eyedropper icon) lets you click a neutral pixel in the photo to remove color tints throughout an image.

The first way we all learned to turn a color photo to black-and-white is the one-click, convert-to-grayscale option in Photoshop's Image > Mode menu-and it still has its place.

For B/W images I get better results instead by
1.) ensuring that I am in GRAYSCALE mode (IMAGE > MODE > GRAYSCALE). This eliminates the other color channels, allowing smaller file sizes, and then
2.) Use the "Save As" command and choose a file type ...

If you have an area in your image that you know should be pure black with 0 on all color channels, pure white with 255 on all color channels or a midtone area that should be some level of grayscale on all color channels, ...

This can take the form of black and white film or digital conversion to grayscale, with optional image manipulation to enhance the results. For amateur use, certain companies such as Kodak manufacture black-and-white disposable cameras.

Mouse over the one with a squiggly line and you'll discover it's called HSL / Grayscale. Click on the tab and place a check in the Convert to Grayscale box.

As an option, you may want to desaturate your image (Shft-Ctrl-U) or force your image to grayscale (Image->Mode->Grayscale). In practice, I've found that forcing the image to grayscale preserves smooth textures better than desaturation of color.

Step 8: Working with Grayscale Images
Some images looks great as black-and-white while others not. It's possible one photo that looks bad in color to have much better appearance when is turned into grayscale.

If the photo is in black and white, you can either scan it in grayscale or color. The color scan option will give you a greater ability to manipulate the image. You can change it back to grayscale once it's been scanned.

1: Probably the easiest way to get a black-and-white file in Photoshop is to open the image and then go to: Image Mode Grayscale. The software will ask if you want to "discard color info.

Grayscale images are distinct from black-and-white images, which in the context of computer imaging are images with only two colors, black and white; grayscale images have many shades of gray in between.

I saw some amazing photos that had a background that was grayscale, but the object in the middle was colored.

I think it's a fun exercise to view any colorful image in grayscale, just to see if it would work as a black & white photo. So I did a simple conversion in Photoshop, as you can see here.

In their normal condition these are grayscale devices. To create color a color pattern is laid down on the sensor pixels, using RGBG color mask. (Red, Green, Blue, and Green) The extra Green is used to create contrast in the image.

I took this shot in southern Utah (#1) and used an automated process to convert it to black and white (Image>Mode>Grayscale) and got this result (#2). You can see that contrast has been lost and the image is quite flat.

Bumps are applied by matching up a series of grayscale pixels with colored pixels on the rendered, colored object. Lighter grayscale pixels create a sense of maximum relief or maximum indentation; darker pixels have less effect.

Move the Luminance slider to the right to remove grayscale (non-color) noise. Move the Color Slider to the right to remove Color noise.

Nothing gives away the color balance of a printing system better than printing something that is black and white then viewing it in various lighting along with a Kodak Grayscale chart.

Most digital cameras have a black and white photo mode option, or your photos can be converted to grayscale using any basic photographic software. Use unusual directional lighting and angles for especially striking effects.

Below left is the result of just changing the mode to grayscale, as you can see it's a bit washed out and lacking in detail compared to the picture on the right that has been created using the channel mixer.

The TIFF format supports CMYK, RGB, and grayscale files with alpha channels, and Lab, indexed-color, and Bitmap files without alpha channels. TIFF also supports LZW compression.

Though Photoshop does allow a photo to be changed from color to black and white by utilizing the Image/Mode/Grayscale command sequence the end result is usually a flat image where white and gray objects are the same shade.
