A mask is a grayscale image. You can do anything to a mask that you can do to a grayscale image, including filter it. Use the filters Maximum and Minimum (Filter > Other > Maximum or Minimum) to reposition a contour mask.

Channels are grayscale images that store different types of information: Color information channels are created automatically when you open a new image.

Every channel is a grayscale image of exactly the same size as the image and, consequently, consists of the same number of pixels.

For B/W grayscale images the "Save As" command encodes the .JPG as only one color channel; the "Save for Web" command for some reason saves the B/W images as three color channels, wasting precious bits.

The layer mask is actually a complete grayscale image in its own right. You can use the brush tool or whatever else strikes your fancy to manipulate the layer mask.

Step 8: Working with Grayscale Images
Some images looks great as black-and-white while others not. It's possible one photo that looks bad in color to have much better appearance when is turned into grayscale.

Each cavity is unable to distinguish how much of each color has fallen in, so the above illustration would only be able to create grayscale images.

Grayscale images are distinct from black-and-white images, which in the context of computer imaging are images with only two colors, black and white; grayscale images have many shades of gray in between.

Many early such cameras could only capture grayscale images. To take a color picture, it required three separate scans done with a rotating colored filter. These are called multi-shot backs.

A special visual effect, used in both film and video, which produces a smooth transformation from one object to another.

Unlike a selection, a mask is a grayscale image just as your images are. This means you can edit one just like you edit images; using brushes, erasers, fills, filters, and almost every other tool and technique you have learned.
