If a foreground does not contribute to an image, it detracts from it. Figure 7 is a case in point. The area in front of this waterfall consisted of a small lake.
The foreground, what foreground?
When photographers talk about the foreground they are referring to the smaller parts of a photo that are often overlooked.
The background light can be varied for different effects. When only spillover light illuminates the background (far left) it's a uniform gray. When not illuminated at all (second from left) it's black.
If the background is far enough away (well outside the depth of field) and the subject if fairly close (well inside the hyperfocal distance) the degree of blurring is related to the absolute physical size of the lens aperture. For a 56mm f5.
If your background is a shadow area, for example, there won't be enough light reflected back into the camera to register anything on your sensor.
Living underground for extended periods requires a unique approach. The image, top left on page 40, was shot in Crete as a part of a student-led expedition and shows how teams collect water for drinking and cooking.
Figure and Ground
We can often identify one specific type of division of space when looking at pictures: the division between figure and ground.
Once the background is highlighted, use a tool called Gaussian Blur. This is a specific type of blurring routine designed to imitate the blurring that happens in traditional photography.
Bring a Background.
Another solution is to create backgrounds and make them part of your photography equipment. You can buy studio backgrounds, but it's less expensive and just as effective to use some large color cards or a bed sheet.

For those of you who aren't familiar with CSS, here is a brief tutorial on how to change your themes background:

Alternatively, you can use Photoshop, select the background and use the Blur filter.
As the angle of view changes, so too will the expanse of background you will see behind your subject. With a wide angle lens, you will see a vast amount of whatever is back there. With the narrow angle of view of a telephoto you will see less.
When you look at a well done photo with a pure white background it looks easily done. That's not the case. Just having a white background is not enough. Try it without using the techniques in this lesson and you'll get a muddy gray background.
Most photos have two dimensions, the foreground and background. The most common forgotten dimension in photography is middle ground. It is so easy to capture an image of a subject against a wall, sky, or a tree, but an entire dimension is lost.
Go outside and photograph a close object where the background elements are far away in distance. This is extreme to ensure you easily see the visual differences as you change the F number.

Ground glass
Frosted glass used as a viewing mechanism in cameras without prisms. The glass is placed so that the lens projects the image against the glass for focusing and composition purposes.
Background and Foreground
A photograph is a 2 dimensional representation of a 3 dimensional scene. This means that the camera effectively "flattens" the scene. Background is anything behind your subject.
BACKGROUND LIGHT: Move the second flash behind your subject to separate the subject and background (see photos).
Background - what color do I want my background to be? Do I want it black, blue, green? Is it in focus or blurred? Is there a colorful object nearby that I can get into the background?

Background Light, Set Light
Reveals the character of the background and helps separate it from the subject. Angle: toward the back-ground, usually from the side and high enough to avoid Glare and subject or microphone shadows.
Foreground The area between the camera and the principal subject.
Frame One individual picture on a roll of film. Also, tree branch, arch, etc., that frames a subject.
Background printing. A printing method that allows the user to continue working whilst an image or document is being printed from a computer.

Background movement covers ripples in water, leaves, waterfalls, clouds, etc. From my experience the software seems to do a pretty good job with these, but obviously, minimizing movement in the first place gives the best result.

Background:
The part of the scene that appears behind the principal subject of the picture. The sharpness of the background can be influenced by apertures and shuttle set.
A Background makes a big difference in determining whether to trust TTL. The coral reef is nearly on the same plane as the clown triggerfish and therefore reflects back enough light to make TTL accurate.

Use background materials to emphasize colour and tint. Use filters, see-thru transparency, reflectors,
and diffusers to devaluate or neutralize strong colours. Use white and gray for backgrounds.

The background may distract from your main subject - unless you're aiming for a Product Shot where you want to situate your subject in his or her environment, and do want both subject and background to be in sharp focus.
