Which format should you shoot?
Do you mow yourown lawn, wash your own car, and fix things when they break? Then you should shoot photos in the RAW! No, not nude.

 


Which format is best? That's a question which is almost impossible to answer. All else being equal, a larger format will yield a higher quality image, but all is rarely equal.

Choosing which format to use is a very important part of composition. Try it both ways. View the scene in both formats, see which one looks better. But more importantly, there are several guidelines to keep in mind when deciding which format to use.

Deciding which format you use is fundamental so it’s important to make the right choice. We always advise using Raw (or both where possible). The decision is between JPEG and Raw file formats and all DSLR offer this choice.

Think first about your intended application. 35mm cameras are universal, MF cameras and LF cameras are really more specialized. What kind of work are you going to do, and in which conditions ?

In film formats, each format is about double the dimensions of the next format, or four times the area. This is a huge and obvious difference. In digital with 1.6x or DX vs. Nikon FX or Canon full-frame, the difference is only 1.

When choosing between JPEG and RAW formats, here are some things to consider about each format.

Now photographers don't have to choose which format to shoot as they can have their cake and eat it too. In many of the models which support this feature you are also able to choose the quality of the JPEG file produced.

Flip the camera to check which format works best: vertical (portrait), or horizontal (landscape). Try both if you're not sure.

We are unlikely to see a standard focal length format in digital camera anytime soon. As such digital camera will have to borrow the 35mm film camera equivalent focal length as a common reference point.

Go through a couple of typical rolls of your work and add up how many of each format you ended up with. Doing so with the images I have posted in the portfolio shows that I have 53 percent vertical and 47 percent horizontal. Not bad.

If deciding which format looks best becomes difficult, photograph it both ways and decide later; it's often easier to grasp the full impact from a print than it is when you're looking through the viewfinder.

Each format is something of a trade off between cost, convenience and quality. Currently most nature work is probably being done with Digital SLRs, both small (APS-C) and full frame.

There are various ways to store an image, including jpeg, gif, tiff, bitmap and RAW files. It's easy to identify which format is used by looking at the end of the file name after the period. For example, photo.jpeg is a jpeg image.

If you own a DSLR you choose to shoot photos in either RAW or JPEG format. (Most compact digital camerass only offer JPEG, although a few high-end models have RAW capability). What are each format's advantages and disadvantages?

But that doesn't mean that slides aren't as good as negatives or that JPEGs aren't as good as Raw files. It means you need to decide on your goals for your photography and about which format fits your shooting needs and style.
