Half-frame camera - camera designed to use 35mm film in a half-frame format.
Half-plate - picture format measuring 4 ¾ x 6 ½ inches. Some early cameras produced negatives of this size.

-Half-frame - negative format of 18 x 24mm. Images are recorded on a vertical axis on standard 35mm film, thus giving 72 half-frame images on film designed for 36 exposures.

One unusual design, the Olympus Pen half-frame 35 mm SLR system, manufactured by Olympus in Japan, used a rotary focal plane shutter mechanism that was extremely simple and elegant in design.

1959 saw the release of the Olympus Pen Series half-frame film cameras, which collectively sold about 17 million units. The most advanced half-frame camera that was designed was the Olympus Pen F single lens reflex.

For example, an APS-sized image sensor is about half-frame and therefore has a crop factor, or focal length multiplier, of 2x (more accurately, 1.6x).

The PAL TV standard defines a composite video signal with a refresh rate of 50 half-frames per second where each frame contains 625 lines.

Governed in the camera by the opening at the rear of the body over which the film passes or is placed. The standard 35 mm format is 36 x 24 mm; half-frame, 18 x 24 mm; 126 size, 28 x 28 mm; 110, 17 x 13 mm; standard roll film (120 size), 2x 2 in.
