This is a really fun and powerful technique, perhaps too powerful and often giving images full of artifacts or with an unnatural look after the tone mapping step (halo artifacts are the most common).
The Detail slider suppresses the halo effects in a picture. It allows you to increase the Amount sharpening but without generating noticeable halo edges in the picture.
If the sun, or a another light source (such as natural light streaming from a window) is right behind your subject's head, you can get a pleasing halo effect.
Amount controls contrast; a higher setting will create a brighter halo, darker line and contrastier texture. Radius controls how thick halos and lines get.
There is a white halo around the stalk which is a bit more obvious than I would like and the black line between the apples is a bit bold but, as I said before, if you look for every bit of evidence you would end up not using the filter at all.

With backlighting, and the subject against a dark background, you can get a "halo" effect with the hair.
The horizontal edges will be blurred or show a halo effect whereas the vertical edges are sharp(er). This is a frequent problem with VR/IS lenses or zooms that extend significantly.
It will be visible as a white halo or vertical streak which extends for several pixels. The effects of blooming often make chromatic aberrations more visible.

The result is the characteristic glow (halo) around bright/highlight areas on Kodak HIE photos. Many people like this glowing effect, and it's definitely a contributing factor to the popularity of the film.
