Hard Copy: A printed paper copy of output in readable form. It is also a transparency film or photograph of an image displayed on the monitor.

Hard copy back ups are good too, as they are less susceptible to electrical surges or coffee spills. DVD-R's hold a large amount of information, up to 4 GB (the storage size of an I-pod Mini).

For a little hard copy comparison I cropped off the top and bottom of the original 1200 dpi 4X5 scan (5584X4407 pixels) of the 2004 Oceanside Harbor photo (to give it 6X9 proportions). I then resized this image up to 7200X4800.

To speed things up you can offer to email or fax the invoice for the agreed upon advance and then follow that up with a hard copy that will be mailed in.

Photographers may provide hard copy proofs in the form of 4x5 or 4x6 prints, a "magazine" of images with thumbnail sized pictures on multiple pages, an online proof gallery, images on CD or DVD in the form of a gallery or a slideshow, ...

Soft Proof
Viewing a digital image with a monitor instead of generating a hard copy proof.

CMS. Colour management system. A software program designed to ensure colour matching and calibration between video and/or computer monitors and any form of hard copy output.

If you or someone else in the family is computer literate, you may prefer to scan the images onto the Internet for downloading by family members scattered across the country. Send hard copy through the mail to any relatives not yet hooked up to ...

O'Sullivan, Roger Fenton, William Henry Jackson, Francis Frith and Felice Beato are foreign to you, you owe yourself a look at their work, preferably in a well-printed hard copy history of photography or a museum with a large photography collection.
