A good lens hood can nearly eliminate flare caused by stray light from outside the angle of view. Ensure that this hood has a completely non-reflective inner surface, such as felt, and that there are no regions which have rubbed off.

2. Use a lens hood whenphotographing near or facing a powerful light source. Also use a lens hood as an extra means of protection for the lens against any direct impact or fingerprints. These can decrease image quality.

Hood does more than just block light source. It also partially protects the front part of the lens, but I has to be at least bit narrow/long of course I use lens hood everytime I use my 70-200 or 100 macro, even if it's overcast.

If the hood had a small opening at the rear, just enough for the photographer to adjust the filter with one finger, the process would be much easier. Since most lens hoods today are plastic, adding such an opening is an easy procedure.

A lens hood lets you block light from the lens. Stray light can cause lens flare and lower image contrast.
Lens converters are available for many cameras that increase or decrease the focal length of the built-in zoom lens.

Q: Lens hood.
A: I use a lens hood when practical or needed. If I decide it's not necessary, I don't need the bulk and weight in the bag. Many times I am in mountainous terrain and need to travel light.

Two more things that can really help, but are not needed, are a remote shutter release, and also a lens hood, which can help block surrounding ambient light (such as if you're around a surrounding city, or with street lights).

Filter, step-up rings, lens hood.
Before we begin, you will need to check to see if your camera has an infrared blocking filter (also called a "hot mirror" filter) installed.

With the lens hood a mere few inches from the object to be photographed it may be difficult to get sufficient light onto the frontal areas, and just not enough room to place a reflector or diffuser panel where you want it.

Fins, mask, snorkel and wet suit (with hood, see below) are all you need pack. Underwater, you will only be shooting wide-angle, and the wider the better. Do not take strobes, arms, spotting lights etc, as you can’t use them.

Good reasons why photographers should use a lens hood
Apart from making your equipment seem larger and getting you more attention from non SLR photographers, lens hoods do have a real purpose.

Use a lens hood at all times to reduce flare and also protect the front element of your lens. Whenever possible, close the lens down two or three stops. All lenses are at their sharpest when closed a couple of stops.

The supplied lens hood is long enough that lens flare isn't a problem but the hood is not very sturdy (especially considering the cost of the lens). Controls on the lens are recessed so as to not be accidentally bumped and the tripod mount is sturdy.

The AII has a metal 'flip up' focusing hood with leather baffles. The focusing hood assembly is hinged and can be flipped out of the way or easily removed if you want to use a regular dark cloth for focusing.

Removing the cap like you would on any other lens, still leaves the lens hood type of attachment on the lens. Leaving the cap on the attachment and pulling on the entire assembly removes the hood. Here is the product shot again: ...

For this reason, it makes sense to use a lens hood or lens shade to prevent unwanted flare in your photograph. That doesn't mean you should avoid flare at all costs.
