Horizontal or Vertical
Anyone who's ever held a 35mm camera knows that the "normal" orientation when you look through the viewfinder is horizontal or "landscape" mode.

 


Horizon Lines
As an avid traveler and nature lover, I often find myself taking landscape photographs. Taking photographs of the horizon or a large area of landscape can be tricky.

Horizon
The line at which earth and sky appear to meet. Its position, which can be altered by titling the camera or by cropping the image determines whether the sky or the landscape concentrates interest in the picture.

For example, if it was water reflections on a beach that first took your eye, then make sure the ground area makes up 2/3 of your photo, placing the horizon within the top third of the image.

Horizontal lines tend to indicate a sense of homeostasis (lack of change).

Horizontal LPH refers to the number of (vertical) lines measured along the horizontal (x) axis or width of the image. Crop A shows a test pattern consisting of 9 black lines with 8 black white lines in between.

Horizon
Another point you want to keep in mind is your horizons. You want your horizon to be level as possible. This might have to be corrected during your post processing.

horizontal frequency
Measure of the speed at which the electron beam in a monitor sweeps across the width of the active area of the screen. Usually expressed in kilohertz (kHz).

The number of vertical lines that a system is capable of producing (counted on a horizontal axis).

The computer that performs centralized functions in a network.

Horizontal perspective
Use the Horizontal slider to carefully correct the horizontal perspective, once again using the grid as a guide for this. You may find that a little rotation is needed via the Rotate slider to achieve a perfect result.

5. Horizon Line Mayhem
For some mysterious reason, most human beings have a hard time holding the camera level when using the LCD monitors on their digicams. The result can be cockeyed sunsets, lopsided landscapes, and tilted towers.

To prevent lines from converging near the top of the distant buildings, Fine didn't tip his DSLR; he positioned its sensor parallel to the buildings before him.

Horizontal enlargers are comprised of a trestle, with the head mounted on crossbars between two or more posts for extra stability.

Horizons and straight trees can be exceptions, though, and often look better with some correction. They're easily corrected with the Remove Distortion slider in Photoshop's Lens Correction filter.

The horizon, cut along the top 1/3 portion of the image follows the rule-of-thirds guideline. More importantly, the image invites our eyes to dance around the frame in a very favorable manner.

Skewed horizon lines, buildings that look like they are almost collapsing and strange proportions often originate from a camera that is held incorrectly. Rule #1: always hold your camera with both hands.

adjusting the horizon
Another simple correction that can be made is to rotate the photo so that the horizon or objects captured appear straight.

The upper and lower horizontal lines also make for a good division of where approximately to put the horizon depending on whether you want more land (or sea) or more sky.

As noted above, cross-type sensors are more accurate than linear sensors because they can detect both horizontal and vertical lines rather than just lines in one direction.

Make sure horizon lines are straight. Use the rule of thirds. If your image has unnecessary information in the background, crop the photo (unless the rules don't allow it).
Photos should be properly exposed.

Does the horizon line look better at the bottom or the top of the frame? How about the middle? Also, consider what you would like to include in the foreground. Does the overall mood of the photo change from various vantage points?

At the lakeside in Iceland, as mentioned, the colours are formed by one of the best possible weather systems, that of low cloud with a distant clear view to the horizon.

Having multiple AF sensors, particularly if they are arranged in a pattern that allows you to move the focus both horizontally and vertically, is a huge help in staying focused on a subject that is not in the center of your frame.

Digital image histograms are presented as a bar chart with the horizontal axis being the tonal range of your image (see above example). The left side of the graph is 0 (zero) and the right side of the graph is 255.

If we want a wideangle shot we want a wide field of view (say, 84 degrees horizontal). If we want a "normal" shot we want a "normal" field of view (say, 40 degrees horizontal) and if we want a telephoto shot, we want a narrow field of view (say 6.

2 shows that horizontal elements are the same as each other, but vertical elements are opposed to each other, so the vertical elements tend to cancel each other out, but the horizontal elements don’t contribute. Lower contrast is the result.

A two way pan & tilt head has a pan option to allow the camera to be rotated along a horizontal path and a tilt option to point the camera in up or down directions.
