horizontal resolution
the number of vertical lines that a system is capable of producing (counted on a horizontal axis).

Aggressive sharpening in the camera-generated jpegs is producing noticeable halos around edges in our resolution test chart.

A measure of horizontal resolution in a video system, measured by the number of vertical black lines that can be resolved on a white background.

Resolution (TV lines) refers to the maximum number of vertical lines /pixel elements (horizontal resolution) a video camera is capable of displaying on a monitor or registering with a video recording device.

The second method would retain more resolution, but would yield an image whose horizontal resolution progressively decreases toward the top. Either way, the shifted lens generally yields the best quality.

For example, you could buy an (albeit expensive) camera back with over 7,000 pixel horizontal resolution in the mid-1990s. However, as of 2004, it is still difficult to buy a comparable CCD matrix camera of the same resolution.

Digicams are commonly rated by Megapixels. You multiply the horizontal resolution by the vertical resolution to get the total pixel count:
1280 x 960 pixels = 1 Megapixel
1600 x 1200 pixels = 2 Megapixels
2048 x 1536 pixels = 3 Megapixels ...

Video recording format and medium offering horizontal resolution of over 400 lines. See VHS and Beta.
sample rate ...

This is the CCD (or CMOS) resolution of one million pixels. Digicams are commonly rated by Megapixels. You multiply the horizontal resolution by the vertical resolution to get the total pixel count. For example 2590 x 1920 = 5 Megapixels.

Dots Per Inch (DPI) - A measurement of print resolution. DPI indicates how many individual dots a device can address on a page per square inch of area. DPI is typically listed as horizontal resolution by vertical resolution.
