Hotshoe flashes.
Canon sell and have sold a number of different standard hotshoe flash units, which can be divided into three basic categories. Have a look here for a brief comparison of E and EZ (ie: non-EX) flash units.

Hotshoe flashes are the accessory flashguns that fit onto the hotshoe of your camera.

The lack of hotshoe means there's currently no option for anything more powerful or, more importantly, something that carries its own batteries, but for most situations, it's easy enough to slip in your pocket if you need it.

flash dialed down to a bare minimum so it doesn’t add significantly to the image and optical slaves such as the Adorama Electronic Slave Unit to trigger the other lights. In the case of the Sony NEX-7, you will need the Sony Hotshoe ...

When operating your hotshoe flash in manual mode, you are basically setting the power of the flash. Most flash units allow you to decided whether to use the maximum or the minimum power it can supply along with steps in between.

Before the days of hotshoe flash connectors and TTL flashes, the method of connecting the flash to the camera body was by PC cord. This cord if fairly thin and can be easily broken but can fire a flash from a great distance if necessary.

The FlashFire™ has built in HotShoe capabilities, making it ideal for both on and off camera.

I always use my Gitzo tripod along with a hotshoe spirit level, a cable release and an angle finder.

Electronical contact on every hotshoe for transferring the fire orders from the flash. Because this contact is the main contact and it is always situated in the middle of the hotshoe, it is also called middle contact.

If your camera has a hotshoe (a little metal square on top with electrical contacts), you can attach an external flash.

My preference with flash photography is to have dedicated flash that is either on a hotshoe, flash bracket or off camera - however there are plenty of times when all you've got at your disposal is the in camera flash.

A supplementary flash unit (speedlight) that connects to the camera via the hotshoe or a cable, or is triggered by the light from the camera's internal built-in flash.

You can trigger them with a wireless remote, the light from another flash (a.k.a. a 'slave' system), or you can physically hook them up to your camera's hotshoe with a cable. If you're looking for the cheapest solution, go with a cable.

Buy a level. Hama and others make a small two-way spirit level that fits in the flash hotshoe. This is the surest way to line things up, but is not always convenient.

Canon, Nikon Minolta and Olympus for example, all have electrical contacts in the hotshoe which passes TTL (through the lens) metering and AF range information to and from the flash unit or speedlight.

The un-natural, red-eyed look when photographed by a camera with the flash too close to the lens (as is the case with nearly all consumer digicams and film cameras). Using a flash on the camera hotshoe may help; ...

If it’s a massive flood, give the housing a freshwater rinse (inside and out), avoiding electrical components like the wiring for the hotshoe. If there’s a battery in the moisture alarm, remove it first.

(D90, D5000 and below) and cheaper film cameras (N80 and below) will not couple (or work at all) with this lens, so you'll be on your own guessing exposure using the rear LCD or an external meter, or get a tiny Gossen Digisix meter and hotshoe ...
