Hue & Saturation
Change and enhance color with precision using this adjustment tool
By Ibarionex R. Perello ...

More on Hue/Saturation in Photoshop
Last week, I wrote about adjusting saturation in Photoshop using the Hue/Saturation tool. Given the importance of color, it's no wonder I wasn't able to cover everything.

Hue is typically described with common color words such as red, yellow, blue, etc. When making changes to hue, we generally think of lightening, darkening or otherwise changing an image's hue characteristics.

The paper base is not affected so whites stay white. Common toning colours are sepia and blue. This can be achieved digitally using most software’s hue/saturation settings or Photoshop’s duotones system.

Hue
Hue, along with saturation and brightness make up the three distinct attributes of color (as defined in the HSL color space). The terms "red" and "blue" are primarily describing hue.

Hue is unique in one respect, it is the actual color, as measured by its wavelength, while the other two characteristics (saturation and lightness) modify the hue in some way.

Hue adjustment
This setting subtly adjusts the hue of the image, a negative setting makes red tones appear more blue/purple, a positive setting makes them appear more yellowish.

Hue/Saturation
I personally believe that Hue/Saturation is the most important tool in Photoshop. I use it on almost every image I tone. It can be used to correct for mixed lighting, bad white balance, flat grey tones and a bunch of other problems.

Hue/Saturation
I use Hue/Saturation adjustment layers to handle a few common problems. One of these is yellow grass. In photographs, grass and foliage tend to be a bit on the yellow side, particularly when lit by direct sunlight.

Hue: A color has three defining characteristics: its hue, value and intensity. The hue of a color is determined by the dominant light wavelengths that are reflected or emitted from an object.

Hue Blend Mode
The Hue Blend mode creates the result color by combining the luminance and saturation of the base color with the hue of the blend color.

Hue A term that describes the entire range of colors of the spectrum. HVGA Half the screen size of VGA screens. HVGA has a screen resolution of 480x320 (3:2), commonly used as a display size for PDA and cellphones.

Hue - The distinct characteristics of color that distinguishes blue from red and yellow from green, etc. Technically, hue is the dominant wavelength in the reflected or emitted light.

Hue
A term used to describe the entire range of colors of the spectrum; hue is the component that determines just what color you are using. In gradients, when you use a color model in which hue is a component, you can create rainbow effects.

Hue/Saturation: These controls can be used to alter an image's colours without affecting contrast or brightness.
Internal Storage: non-removable camera memory.

Hue, Saturation, Brightness (HSB) Color Model - A model that defines all possible colors by specifying a particular hue and then adding or subtracting percentages of black and white.
Hue - A pure color.

Hue
The aspect of colour that distinguished it from another colour (what makes a colour red, green, or blue). Hue is distinct from saturation, which measures the intensity of the hue.

Hue
This is the color itself, which results from the combination of primary colors. All shades (except for the gray levels) are represented in a chromatic circle: yellow, blue, and also purple, orange, etc.

Hue color.:
The attribute of colors that permits them to be classed as red, yellow, green, blue, or an intermediate between any contiguous pair of these colors.

Hue & Saturation
Another tool that I made extensive use of in this picture is 'Hue & Saturation'. This can be found under the 'Image' -> 'Adjustments' menu.

These algorithms adapt their method of estimation (i.e. the estimation formula) depending on features of the area surrounding the pixel of interest.

Hue - name of the color (e.g. red, blue, yellow).
Hydrobromic acid - acid liberated during the developing process by the reduction of bromide.
Hydrochloric acid - chemical used in some bleaching solutions.

1. Hue and Saturation - shifting the colour within the colour range.
2. Colour Enhance - making a colour more/less vivid.
3. Contrast - adjustments to make parts of the picture stand out.

STEP 4: Hue/ Saturation - To punch up the color in the sky, I went to the Hue / Saturation dialog box and clicked on the saturation slider. I dragged it to plus 10 which added more zip to the sky.

Alter Hue/Saturation
Repeat step 8, but this time you need to create an Adjustment Layer for Hue/Saturation. Again, the changes you make will affect each of your layers. To target specific colours, you can use the Edit drop-down tab.

Shade: A hue produced by the addition of black.
Tint: A hue produced by the addition of white.

Value, Not Hue
It is very important to keep in mind that you are using black and white film. A scene may seem very interesting, but if the composition relies on color contrasts, often times when it is rendered in grays, it falls flat.

HSL - Hue, Saturation, Luminance A particular conformation of color theory. HST - Hubble Space Telescope Hubble Constant The constant of proportionality (designated H) between recession velocity and distance in the Hubble law.

The hue of the color image can be grayish brown, reddish brown, brownish red, orange, yellow, greenish brown, brownish green, purplish brown, brownish purple, blue, or subtle combinations of these.

Color (hue) is one of the elements of art. Artists use color in many different ways. The colors we see are lightwaves absorbed or reflected by everything around us. In nature, a rainbow is white light that is broken apart by the moisture in the air.

Then create a 2nd hue/saturation layer, and drop the saturation to 0, as in your tutorial (or whatever other way you want to change to black and white), and click OK. now you've got your B&W image.

Color is defined by three qualities: hue (the actual wavelength), saturation (intensity or chroma), and brightness (reflective). A pure hue is fully saturated or undiluted.

HSBThis stands for hue (the pigment); saturation (the amount of pigment) brightness (the amount of white included) in a coloured stock photo.

Color correction can also be done using an HSL (Hue, Saturation and Luminance - HSL) adjustment tool. I've found the HSL tool to be an extremely useful method of color correction.

Hue/Saturation: Hue allows you to adjust the color and saturation controls richness or intensity.
Variations. Several thumbnails of an image being edited with different colors, brightness and contrast.

We've all gotten those pictures back with a yellow hue about them. The picture looks okay, but that yellow coloring ruins everything. In order to get rid of the yellow glow, you can use a flash (see tip above) or you can get different light bulbs.

Another tool I use for b&w work is the Hue/Saturation/Luminance tab while still in ACR. This allows me to push similar colors farther apart or closer together, as in the cheetah image (page 52).

I don't recommend to use the Hue / Saturation / Lightness sliders in Photoshop. Changing one slider will usually affect the other two settings.

The primary colour cast across the atmosphere is usually a deep blue hue with noticeable orange and yellow tones at the horizon due to the rising sun.

Oversaturation is when the hue/color levels are particularly powerful, strong and perhaps garish in their representation of a color.

Select your program's "adjust hue/saturation" control
Click the "colorize" selection to apply the changes evenly over the image
Move the hue to a reddish/brown color
Desaturate the image until the reddish/brown tone is very faint ...

1st - go to "Hue/Saturation"
2nd - then drag "Saturation" to the far left, then hit enter.
3rd - you now have a new layer (Hue/Saturation). Now, make sure the "black box" on your tool box is on the bottom.

- saturation or intensity is the brightness or dullness of a color;
- chroma is how pure a hue is in relation to gray;
- shade: a hue produced by the addition of black.
- tint: a hue produced by the addition of white.

To complete the change, choose Image > Adjustments > Hue / Saturation and change the Hue to experiment with the look of the room.

This special light is what gives the snow and the trees an eerie greenish hue. The natural pinkish purple hue of the sky contrasts nicely with the light reflecting off of the snow.

PhotoPlus 6 does give you the ability to edit color, hue, saturation and do retouching to enhance your digital images.

Now, click on "Add New Layer" (the half black/half white circle icon at the bottom of the layers pallet); select hue/saturation layer; and finally use the hue and saturation sliders to get the best look.

-Saturated color - pure color hue, undiluted by other colors, white or gray, i.e. the primary colors, red, yellow and blue are saturated colors.
-Scale - linear relation between the size of the subject and the size of its image.

Soft light awakens worlds of subtle hue and gradation and provides a gentle but pleasant modeling in both landscapes and portraits.

Color can also be adjusted by changing the contrast, hue, and saturation. You can make your images lighter.
