Hyperfocal Distance
When it comes to maximizing the DOF, the hyperfocal distance is a very important concept.

The Hyperfocal Distance or point is the nearest point to the camera which is regarded as acceptably sharp when the lens is focused at infinity.

HYPERFOCAL DISTANCE - Technically, it is the distance between the camera and the hyperfocal point.

Hyperfocal Distance Distance of the nearest object in a scene that is acceptably sharp when the lens is focused on infinity.

This works the same as it does on conventional depth of field scales. The hyperfocal distance is the same as the result from the formula or the tables for any given f/stop and focal length.

Fixed focal lenses also include hyperfocal scale which are f-stop numbers written on either side of the focus mark on the lens. These scales are used for setting the lens to the hyperfocal distance for different f-stops.

This is called hyperfocal focusing.

Ren, I think you are referring to "hyperfocal distance" and those little numbers on the old lenses that used to help with depth of field focusing. Now, it's the 1/3, 2/3 rule, right?
