I setting

I setting - mark found on some cheap box cameras which indicates an instantaneous shutter speed of approximately 1/50 second.

We will now assign a dpi setting to the scanned image in order to scale the image for printing. If I used the same dpi setting to print (4000) that I used to scan, I'd get an image exactly the size of my original slide or negative at .91 by 1.

When printing a photo, remember that your DPI setting on your printer must be set substantially higher than your PPI setting: while computers can produce multiple colors within a given pixel, ...

If you take an image that is 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels high, and you print it with a PPI setting of 100 pixels per inch, the print will be 8 inches wide by 6 inches high. If you print at 200 PPI you get a print 4" wide by 3" high.

This could include the type of device (i.e., inkjet, press, laser) combined with a DPI or LPI setting and a particular type of substrate. Images intended for screen display can also benefit from output sharpening.

The puzzle of black and white printing gets solved by carefully selecting a finely-tuned combination of driver settings for media type, dpi setting and ink density for each inkjet paper used.

OK, if you are scanning from regular prints then it's perfectly OK to set your scanner to 100 or so DPI, since with a 4x6" print that will give 400 x 600 pixels. Just remember the important part is the 400 x 600 pixel result, and not the DPI setting ...
