FireWire (IEEE 1394) - Developed by Apple Computer, an IEEE 1394 standard-based interface that allows easy connection of one type of electronics device to another. It shares most of the features of USB, although it transfers data much faster.
Also known as IEEE 1394, Fire Wire was invented by Apple Computer but is now commonly used with Windows based computers as well.

Firewire, also know as "IEEE 1394", is an older standard than either USB variants, but certainly not a lesser one. Transfering at speeds up to 400Mbit it is fast and used for many applications other than just cameras.
Also known as i-Link by Sony and IEEE 1394, which is it's formal designation. The default for Digital Camcorder to computer connection, due the speed of data transfer, which is bi-directional, unlike USB.
All Macs made in the past several years have Firewire (IEEE 1394 or iLink) ports on them. If you're stuck on a PC you may have to go get a Firewire card since many PCs have still not caught up with technology.
Firewire
A very fast external bus that supports data transfer rates of up to 400 Mbps. Firewire was developed by Apple and falls under the IEEE 1394 standard. Other companies follow the IEEE 1394 but have names such as Lynx and I-link.
A port on the computer that is faster than a serial port but slower than SCSI, USB, or IEEE 1394 ports. Often used by printers and flash card readers.
