Image format
Refers to the specification under which an image has been saved to disk or in which it resides in the computer memory. There are many commonly used digital image formats in use. Some of the most used are TIFF, BMP, GIF, and JPEG.
RAW Image Format
The most common image format amongst digital cameras is JPEG, it's a format which produces relatively small files from large amounts of image data by discarding certain information, as JPEG uses a "lossy compression algorithm".

All photographic films are made up in basically the same way. The film base is usually plastic such as tri-acetate or polyester which is coated with a light sensitive emulsion.
Image formats do have a resolution field as part of the file header. Some applications use this as defaults when you open the file, but you are not bound by what is recorded there.

RAW image format contains all of the image information from the camera's imaging sensor. Until the file is opened in a RAW converter program there is no tonal range adjustment (levels or curves).
The image format size also will affect the depth of field. The larger the format size, the longer a lens will need to be to capture the same framing as a smaller format.

The JPEG image format can include different modes such as "Fine, "Normal" and "Basic". These different modes utilize different compression either increasing or decreasing the file size respectively.

FlaspPix. An image format that contains a number of resolutions, each of which is broken into tiles that can be edited and displayed independently.

PCX - A digital image format that has been around for a while, and has a number of variations. Created by ZSoft for PC Paintbrush, it is similar to the BMP filetype, so that most image-editing software supports it.

Remember to save your work in the appropriate image format. Use the large TIFF image format if you want to retain all details for subsequent image editing.
JPEG, standing for Joint Photographic Experts Group, is a widely used, compressed image format. This is the standard file format that virtually all digital cameras produce by default.
Windows Media Photo (WMPhoto), a part of the Windows Media family, is a high compression still image format for continuous tone photographic images.

Graphics Interchange Format is a bitmap image format, but it only supports 8-bits per pixel, so it is not really suitable for color photographic images unless they are used in small animations or low resolution film clips.

Although lenses don't necessarily play a role in exposure, but more in image formation, the choice is still there. Under low light conditions, a lens with a larger maximum aperture may give you a crucial stop or two.
