The art movement in which painters broke away from the techniques of continuous brushstrokes and clearly expressed detail. They were largely concerned with the effects of light and colour.

Impressionism
The history of modern art started with Impressionism.
Manet/Monet (my favorite artists) broke the rule and invented the new rules, and started impressionism. So did Piccaso. He repeated the cycles of breaking/inventing.
Thus the parameters of Impressionism, Expressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, etc cannot be maintained very much beyond the time of their invention.
