Direct and Indirect Light
There are two types of light in this world; direct light and indirect light. Each of them serves a unique purpose in photography, and each has its advantages and disadvantages.
Direct and Indirect Light
Photography literally means painting with light. As light (photons) enters our digital sensor, the photons knock lose some electrons (photodiode). The camera can measure these electrons to construct the image.
Indirect Light and Partial Light: Indirect light is light that has been obstructed by clouds, fog, heavy rain, snow, smoke, mist, and other atmospheric particles.
Lastly, indirect light can be used to make your subject glow soft and pretty.

If you are indoors and have indirect light coming from a window, try to get as close as you can to the source.
In any given scene a subject can be fully lit with direct light, fully lit with indirect light or partially lit with backlighting or ambient lighting.
Diffused, Bounced, indirect light; the opposite of Hard Light. The soft shadows and subtle highlights produced are so luscious one wonders why this light isn't used for everything. At times it seems to be.
Diffused or indirect light produces softer tones. For dark shadows and high contrast difference between light and dark use direct light. On the other hand, for tones of gray and softer looks use a diffused light.
Consider other indirect light sources to enhance the depth of the background and props, too.
Some might consider photos taken in the shade as appearing too flat, for example, if indirect light scatters in from everywhere. Such light is effectively enormous in size and erases all shadows.
