Interpolated Resolution
A photographic image resolution that is measured in DPI (dots per inch). Computer software has the ability to enhance or increase an image's resolution by guessing at the color of the dot in between dots of a known color.

Interpolated or Enhanced Resolution
One misleading specification is interpolated or enhanced resolution.

Interpolated. Most software programs can enlarge image resolution beyond the actual resolution by adding extra pixels.

If a datum, instead of being measured, is calculated based upon the data either side of it, it is said to be interpolated.

Software can "look" at an image, and then create an artificially larger image by adding extra pixels according to a complex algorithm.

What does "interpolated resolution" mean?
It's a fancy way of saying "faking it." Let's say a scanner is capable of scanning 300 pixels per linear inch.

Resolution, interpolated. A process that enlarges an image by adding extra pixels without actually capturing light from those pixels in the initial exposure.

Beware of claims about resolution for cameras because there are two kinds of resolution; optical and interpolated.

Many scanners advertise extremely high interpolated resolutions. Interpolated high resolution is just advertising hype. Scanning with these high interpolated resolutions will not provide you with high quality digital images.

True scanner resolution is optical resolution, not interpolated resolution. Interpolated resolution will read higher than optical because it's been enhanced by the software bundled with the scanner.

Some scanners use interpolated resolution which is an "educated guess" made by the scanner to turn a scan into a higher resolution scan. A 300 X 300 scan can be interpolated into a 600 X 600 dpi.

There are three types of resolution: real resolution, native resolution and interpolated resolution.

Some digital cameras might advertise the "interpolated" pixels. As an example, Fujifilm's Super CCD image sensor can capture "effective" pixels of 3.1 megapixels, then its software kicks in and interpolates them up to 6 megapixels.

Some digital cameras on the market claim to have ‘interpolated resolution’ numbers - a camera would be presented as a four megapixel camera but will claim to have eight ‘interpolated pixels’.

The final sharpening of the image should only take place when it has been interpolated to the final size. Smart Sharpen filter can provide good results but is extremely time consuming on large images.

On all cameras except ones using Foveon, 2 of the colors are interpolated. And in all cases, the camera's three colors are not identical to what the eye sees.

That resolution is known as the camera's interpolated resolution. Interpolation creates new pixels from those that exist and inserts them in-between the existing pixels to increase the image's overall resolution.

To be viewable at all, the raw data has to be de-mosaiced, gamma corrected, and interpolated to form separate red, green and blue channels in some color space.

Many scanners and some digital cameras have two resolution figures quoted in their spec sheets - optical and interpolated.

Some of these cameras use 'interpolated' pixels... that means the camera adds in extra pixels by electronically guessing how they should fit into your picture...the true megapixel count may be much less.

The color intensity values not captured for each pixel can be interpolated (or guessed) from the values of adjacent pixels which represent the color being calculated.

In this mode, the image will be scrolled fast, displayed using the nearest the neighbor interpolation, then interpolated using a bicubic algorithm in the background and redrawn when the interpolation is complete.

Optical resolution
The true resolution of a scanner and the key factor in determining the amount of detail visible in a image. Optical resolution is one type of resolution; the other is interpolated resolution.

The color information for each pixel is then interpolated from this matix. In order to prevent aliasing, an anti aliasing filter is being used, which impacts the sharpness.
