There are a lot of myths surrounding infrared photography, probably because IR is a bit of a pain to deal with and the effects are often somewhat unpredictable.
IR Infra Red Light is a frequency of light which is lower than the human eye's visible spectrum (in the range of 850 ~ 950 nanometers). Color cameras CANNOT use infrared light whatsoever.

The cost to convert a camera ranges from $350 to $450, depending on camera and conversion service.
With IR films you still need a light source, eg. the sun, and you record the light that is reflected from objects in the scene. Also, when you want only IR light to expose IR film, you have to use filters that block out almost all other wavelengths.

Infra-Red (IR Light) is at the end of the electromagnetic spectrum beyond the reds (long wavelengths). IR light is not visible to the human eye.
This is an IR receiver, which allows the A77's shutter to be triggered using the RMT-DSLR1 infra-red 'Wireless Remote Commander'.

Kodak's High Speed Infrared Film (HIE) has the highest IR sensitivity of the three films but sacrifices Grain size as the grain is very large. Konica Infrared film has a lesser sensitivity to IR wavelengths but has much finer grain than Kodak's.
The D1 family contained a sensor array + IR filter that were quite permissive, letting in as much red light (the closest to IR) as Green and Blue. The result was more signal and less noise in the red channel, but at a cost.
Depending on your camera model, you may need to turn on your camera's IR-ready mode (see manual), so you can use the wireless shutter release. For example, Nikon D40 needs the IR-ready mode to be turned on, otherwise the release won't work.
From the other hand filters such 87C are Infra Red filters - they are transparent only for IR light. Normal film wouldn't be able to take any pictures (you need IR film) but digital cameras are sensitive to IR light.

Invest in a tripod, or some other way to keep your camera stable.
