Joule (flash unit)
Joule describes the energy capacity of a flash unit. It has no ability to determine the amount of light hitting a subject nor does it take into account loss of electrical power from mechanical inefficiencies in the flash unit.

Watt second / Joule ratings can be very misleading as they relate to the supplied electrical power and not the actual light output. Guide numbers are often not much better because they depend on conditions and reflectors defined by each manufacturer.

Flash unit capacity is also described in terms of light output units such as beam candlepower seconds (BCPS) or effective candlepower seconds (ECPS) or in terms of energy capacity units such as joules or watt-seconds.
The bare bulbs below the acrylic had to be at a very low intensity. They shouldn't overpower the candles. I used two Grafit A2s at the lowest possible settings (15 joules each).
