JPEG2000 - The new JPEG compression standard that will be used in digital cameras and software starting in 2002 (maybe?). It will feature higher compression but with less image quality loss.
JPEG2000 Successor format from the JPEG store method. Thanks to the so called Wavelet-compression there is less quality los as with a higher compression density as with JPEG. Nowadays hardly supported. JPG File ending for JPEG files.

Worse - since you'll probably need a Microsoft plugin to read the files, you'll be screwed. At least Photoshop CS2 reads the JPG 2000 standard. Poke around your hard drive: I find a JPEG2000.plugin in my Adobe directories.
If it was opened up to the industry it could be the basis for a truly wonderful and lasting solution. Failing that, then JPEG2000 at least offers a range of quality and size options and can support more flexible meta-data than JPEG.
