Lag time: Does the camera hesitate before taking the picture when you press the shutter release? Most inexpensive ones do. You pay for short lag time.

Lag Time
Probably the biggest single complaint from digital camera owners is the lag time, the delay from pressing the shutter release to the camera actually taking the shot.

Lag Time The delay between the time the shutter is pressed and the camera captures the image. Also known as shutter delay, it is most noticeable in compact digital cameras. Today's digital SLRs have virtually no lag time.

Unlike conventional cameras, digital cameras have a lag time between when the shutter is pressed and when the picture is captured. There is also a lag time while the camera stores the image in memory.

Lag Time
Also known as shutter lag, lag time refers to the delay that sometimes occurs between the time the shutter button is pressed and the time the shutter actually fires.

This was difficult with film-based photography because of a long lag time in the feedback loop - you had to take your film in to be processed before you could see what worked and what didn't.

Another advantage to SLR digital cameras is that they take photographs almost instantly with no lag time. This is useful when taking photographs of moving objects such as children.

For short motions you must understand your camera shutter lag time and have an understanding of the motion to take the picture yourself rather than relying on the camera's multi burst feature.
