Lenses
Lenses are the eyes through which your camera sees the world. You can change the way your camera sees simply by changing lenses or by changing your zoom setting.

Lenses & optics - fhe basics
Apart from the CCD in a digicam, the lens is the most important element to ensure a quality image. Most digicams have zoom lenses which allow you to vary their focal length from wide-angle to telephoto.

LENSES FOR COPYING A primary requirement for a lens used for copying is that it must focus sharply across a flat plan; that is, it must produce a sharp image over its entire field of view-all the way out to the edges of the image.

Lenses in the Lens
A camera lens is actually several lenses combined into one unit. A single converging lens could form a real image on the film, but it would be warped by a number of aberrations.

Zoom lenses - telephoto lenses
These lenses let you zoom in on your object and take pictures from a great distance thanks to the focal length range they come in, for example 70-300 and 55-200.

EF-S lenses and film cameras
No EOS 35mm film camera has or is ever going to use an imaging area smaller than 36x24mm, so no EOS 35mm film camera will ever be able to support EF-S lenses.

Digital Lenses
Almost all lenses made for 35mm cameras work with Digital SLRs. Since digital SLRs have a smaller sensors than 35mm film size, any given focal length used with Digital SLRs covers less of an image compared to that of the 35mm.

Budget Lenses
Old analogue lenses are back in fashion and Tor McIntosh says they’re the perfect budget-conscious solution to extending your creativity and building up your kit bag.

Lenses come in either prime or zoom. Prime lenses have a fixed focal length. In order to fit more or less into the viewfinder, the photographer must physically move forward or backward.

Lenses made to fit film SLR cameras generally will work on digital SLR cameras. However, there is an entirely new crop of lenses built especially for DSLRs and they will not work with film cameras.

Lenses with larger maximum apertures let you use faster shutter speeds and are often called "faster" lenses.

USM lenses are generally heavier than standard ones. You might need to take this into account if like me, you tend to carry around 3 at a time.

Zoom lenses have replaced the fixed focal length camera lens in most camera models, especially with the advent of digital cameras. When choosing camera lenses, bear in mind that an optical zoom lens and a digital zoom lens are different.

cool lenses, I love it
i am planning to get my first lens for my sony a330 (i have been practicing with the regular 18-55 lens) any advise on what i should get???

Macro lenses let you get very close to subjects but have very shallow depth of field. Here I focused on the eye of the newt so it was the sharpest part of the photo.

Dirt is a daily challenge for your lens. Dust and other dirt on the surface of your lens will create horrible images.

Quality lenses aren't cheap, and I see no reason to risk damaging them. Be careful how you clean yours, and remember: doing what you can to prevent them from getting dirty is still your best option.

Compression
Lenses don’t capture the world as we see it with our eyes. I have demonstrated the type of distortion inherent with wide angle lenses in the previous section, and now I want to explain how telephoto lenses distort reality.

Ultra wide angle lenses have unique characteristics. Learning how to use them to your advantage will net you intriguing images. The shorter the focal lengths, the more the lens optically pushes back the subject making it appear smaller in the frame.

Typically Mirror lenses are quite slow so you may live with the limitation of a fixed aperture.

Interchangeable lenses
If the camera has interchangeable lenses you have more flexibility because the lens detaches from the camera allowing it to be replaced by a different one.

Buying the lenses is harder because there is so much choice, so start with the cheap kit lens that comes with the camera and use it for a month or so until you notice its limitations.

What Lenses Do:
Remember first that your choice of lenses will play an important part in your composition and how the final image will look.

Long Lenses
Long, or telephoto lenses, are (correspondingly) any lens with a focal length greater than normal, which is greater than 50mm for 35mm format. Common lengths are 85mm and 105mm.

Zoom lenses
Optical zoom is probably the most popular lens feature on consumer cameras. Normally the zoom range is restricted to around 3:1. On the cheaper cameras, there is a trade-off in maximum aperture at longer focal lengths, e.g.

Zoom Lenses Vs. Prime Lenses

Digital Lenses
Digital camera manufacturers are now working on lenses that are made specially for digital cameras ['Digital' lens is really an unfortunate misnomer]. Film can be properly exposed with light incident on it at any angle.

Lenses with a shorter focal length give a wider view of your subject and its surroundings, and are often used to tell a story or record a bigger scene with both foreground and background in focus.
