Light Value (LV) and Exposure Value (EV) are numerical scales for measuring the amount of light, and the exposure, respectively.

Light painting, also known as light drawing is a photographic technique in which exposures are made usually at night or in a darkened room by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera.

Light tent
A tent like structure made of translucent material hung around a frame. The fabric diffuses the light coming from outside the tent so that highly reflective subjects placed inside the tent can be photographed without reflections.

Lighting - the pitfalls
Most in-camera flashes lack the power to light subjects more than 3 to 4 metres away, so a more powerful off-camera flash unit will be required.

Light tents bathe a subject in soft, even lighting and are particularly useful for complex subjects such as wildflowers and bouquets, highly reflective subjects such as jewelry, and translucent subjects such as glassware.

Lighting "make a photograph" - a very true and true to life statement, just as "clothes make a man"! Consequently if you are a photographer the importance of correct photography lighting techniques need not be overemphasized.

Lighting and knowing how to use light is an important component to successful photography. When working with figures or portrait photography, the correct placement of your studio lights is critical to achieving good pictures.

A light modifier is anything that is used to shape or otherwise direct light.

A light meter, regardless of type, assumes that any scene being metered is average. This means it assumes that there is an even spread of tones from dark to light. In photographic terms, the meter reading will render the scene middle grey.

If light and its qualities are so important to top photographers, it would behoove us to examine light and understand its influence on our photography.

1. Light subject against a dark background i.e. transparent subjects in midwater, silver fish against dark background.
2. Dark subject against a light background i.e. silhouettes of divers. More easily achieved than light against dark.

Many people encounter events where there is a great deal of activity and motion, but all in an environment of low lighting, such as a wedding or reception.

A skylight filter is typically a salmon colored UV filter, to add a slight 'warm' appearance, without so much blue.

LED (light-emitting diode) units are another development in digital studio lighting. Also long lasting and cool, they might be an alternative to fluorescents.

Where lighting is less than optimum, you also have a number of options at your disposal if your camera provides more manual control over its functions.
