While lights may find themselves mounted on a camera or Grid, Hand-held, or clamped virtually anywhere, commonly they are supported, elevated, and positioned by stands. Tip: Only amateurs call stands "Tripods.

The light stands are sturdy enough and very stable (someone tripped over the cord at a recent test and the stands stayed upright).

That amount of gear is perhaps overkill for casual group photography and, in a pinch, I would pare it down to one camera, the 24-70mm lens, one flash and the Ray Flash.

The studio is the most difficult as you’ll have light stands and strobes set up, so make sure they’re secured with gaffers tape or other devices so they don’t fall if bumped.

The disadvantage is weight, meaning you need pretty sturdy and heavy light stands to hold them. Manufacturers include Bowens, Elinchrom, Novatron, Photogenic, White Lightning, and a host of others and all are available as studio lighting kits.

For the near line, you can use a spare light stand if you have one handy.

The night sky is brimming with the brilliant light of distant galaxies and stars. Those pinpricks of light stand out in breathtaking contrast to the deep blackness of night.

For most people, the term "photographic lighting equipment" tends to conjure up visions of complicated setups involving light stands, sand bags, electrical cables, etc. And while lighting can get quite involved, it doesn't always have to be.

It will also contain coverage for things like liability, in case someone trips over your light stand and sues. Many clients, typically, will require a multi-million dollar umbrella policy before you can even step foot on their premises with a camera.

You also want to be careful handling these lights; they really get hot. In addition to light stands and other support equipment, don't forget the tripod. You exposures will often be longer than 1/30th of a second, too long to hand hold.

It should be used from an angle about 6 to 8 feet high and from a position close to the center of the subject area without the light stand or boom showing in the picture.
