Manual flash
Flash output is controlled manually in manual flash mode unlike in auto flash mode, where flash output power varies automatically according to the selected aperture. Some Speedlights, example like the Nikon SB 27, SB 26, SB-25.

 


Manual flash output - Manually select flash output of 1/3, 2/3 or FULL. Available in Manual exposure, Aperture Priority (option) and Shutter Priority (option).
Flash sync selection - Select between 1st-curtain and 2nd-curtain sync.

Manual flash. A nonautomatic mode of flash operation in which the photographer controls the exposure by adjusting the size of the lens opening.

High-end Canon flash units can also work in full manual mode, which lets you set the flash output by hand rather than relying on an automated system like TTL or E-TTL.

To arrive at the exposure for an open-flash picture using a manual flash, determine your flash-to-subject distance and f/stop.

Some thoughts: My Vivitar is a semi-manual flash, not TTL If you are going to use a manual flash, try to find out what the largest opening would be for your point and shoot when using flash. Since the Yashica has a f3.

Calling upon my flash which is always set for Manual Flash Exposure Mode, I quickly dialed in the aperture of f/5.6. The distance scale on the back of my flash then responded and told me that the flash needed to be 27 feet from the subject. Yikes! ...

In images captured at a shutter speed of 1/250s with a Speedlight SB-800, set to Distance-priority manual flash (GN), or Manual flash (M) with flash output set to full (M1/1) mounted on the camera, the top portion was often dark.

For those of you afraid of using manual flash, rest easy: both Canon and Nikon offer cables that will allow you to put your flash on a swing bracket and retain TTL flash capability.

The very affordable ones are usually only used with all manual flashes or studio strobes. The expensive ones are usually for dedicated flashes and allow the camera to transmit data to the flash through the air instead of a wire.

The newer Canon MR14 EX ring light has manual factional power and also allows you to fire either the left or right tube at fractional power settings in both auto flash exposure and manual flash exposure.
