Manual focus
Method of focusing the lens, using either a rotating mechanical action or a motorised method, where you enter a distance on the camera. Cameras with mechanical actions often have an aid to help you focus correctly.
Manual focus is useful for low light, macro or special effects photography. It is very important when the autofocus system is unable to get a good focus lock, e.g. in low light situations.

When photographing with a 35mm SLR, you focus by turning the ring on the lens. Very few digital cameras have this feature, or one that's anywhere near as easy to use.

@jennyg Manual focus is you focusing. So it's always stopped at whatever you focused your shot at. Focus lock won't apply to manual focus because the camera isn't controlling it. You are. That's what manual means. Does that make sense?
Using manual focus may help save time. Chances are, you're going to shoot multiple exposures of the same shot. So use the auto focus feature on your camera to set the first shot, then without changing the focus, switch to manual focus.
I could switch to Manual Focus but I don't trust my eyes (even with a central enlarged image). I could switch to Multi Focus and let the camera decide on the most contrasty area. But why leave this to chance? I decide to use Area Focus instead.

With focusing you have two choices, autofocus (AF) or manual focus.There are different types of autofocus systems but basically you either have it turned on or you don't.

I use only manual focus. As a target for focusing, I put a UPC bar code (from a milk carton) in the drop's path. An aperture of f/4 or f/4.5 gives enough depth of field to keep the drop sharp while blurring the background.
