Mask
Photography is all about the eyes. If you can't see it, you can't shoot it. I find a black, low-profile silicone mask absolutely imperative.

A defined area used to limit the effect of image-editing operations to certain regions of the image.

Mask - To cover part of an image so it will not be affected by other operations.
Midtones - Those portions of an image with a value between black and white, usually in the 25 percent to 75 percent range.

Mask precision
The mask precision parameter controls the precision of focused areas and detection of moving objects. A "high" value is useful for small photos containing tiny details.

Mask
A filter that selectively includes or excludes certain values. For example, when defining a database field, it is possible to assign a mask that indicates what sort of value the field should hold.

Unsharp Mask is the basic sharpening tool to know and use. Smart Sharpen can be used in Photoshop, plus there are Photoshop plug-ins that help, which I'll discuss in a moment.

Unsharp Mask (USM) Unsharp mask is an image-processing technique used to sharpen an image and enhance detail. True unsharp masking is done by subtracting a blurred version of an image from the original.

Use the "Unsharp Mask" plugin to give your photos a sharpness kick. Do it selectively, as was done with this photo.

I use the unsharp mask but never in RGB mode. I always convert to LAB and then sharpen the lightness channel only, then convert back to RGB. This way, I can sharpen more without developing those annoying little coloured edge artifacts.

Photoshop's Unsharp Mask filter does a great job sharpening a soft image. It can't fix an image that is out of focus, but it does add an extra sparkle that makes an image come to life.

"What is Unsharp Mask, and how do you use it to sharpen pictures?" is a question that we get often from readers.

Place the negative emulsion-side up on the printing glass and arrange them under the mask until the desired composition is obtained.

If by chance your film brand is not represented by a profile, SilverFast has two alternate methods of removing the orange mask. NegaFix has an optional 'advanced' dialog that allows you to fine tune the removal of the orange mask.

(If your program offers you a choice, use bicubic interpolation.) Once the resizing is complete, use the unsharp mask filter to sharpen the image (that’s right, the unsharp mask filter actually sharpens an image!).

The final step is to reveal the color image in the area around the filter by creating a layer mask to control how different areas within the layer are hidden and revealed.

I will make adjustments to my image like brightness/contrast (or levels) and saturation, then maybe an unsharp mask all depending on what needs to be done to the image.

Mask Pro 4.1 creates high-quality masks and selections even from tough subjects like hair and glass, making it easy to place a subject in a new background. PhotoTune 2.2 provides professional-quality color correction in an easy-to-use interface.

It's a typical high-contrast scene, with overexposed highlights in part of the scarecrow mask and deep dark shadows behind. For the fix, I employed several techniques (Figure-2).

A process called 'unsharp mask is really the only fifter you require here.

Fins, mask, snorkel and wet suit (with hood, see below) are all you need pack. Underwater, you will only be shooting wide-angle, and the wider the better. Do not take strobes, arms, spotting lights etc, as you can’t use them.

You may already be familiar with a cousin of High Pass--Unsharp Mask-- in Photoshop. But where Unsharp Mask (despite its contrary name) sharpens an image, High Pass is Unsharp Mask on steroids.

First we'll take the picture, make a mask for the ground I want to lighten, and lighten it.

I then mask out areas on this layer to retain the brightness in the centre of the image. This gives me a controllable and very subtle vignette. I would also use this layer at opacity of between 30% and 50%.

For your face, consider a ski mask to reduce the amount of skin exposed to the wind and cold. This can also help reduce the amount of water vapor you breathe onto your camera.

Using a mask of some sort (your hand, a board, any variety of tools), part of the print is exposed for longer than the rest. This is done most often in sky areas. Dodging, the opposite, is done most often to bring out shadow detail.

In Photoshop, with a combination of using the Magic Wand and then hand-painting to refine the multi-leaf selection (See "Real Leaf Mask"), I isolated on a good grouping.

I had to get his mask and snorkel on right, get him started, and then swim around in front of him to snap a photo before he got water in his mask and came up. The best I got were some shots of his back and half his face.

First a tone mask is made by exposing panchromatic black- and- white film to a color image through a color filter. The film is solarized.

Simple solution: apply the mask just a bit. In this example, I am still going pretty extreme. But I couldn't help myself.

The bizarre mask seemed appropriate for a technique that distorted it. Notice also in both this image and the one of the Samburu girl that the background is in focus.

If your image is somewhat soft, and this often happens during scanning, it can be made sharper with the unsharp mask. Sharpening can change colors, so when working with a color scan, do the following to minimize color shifts.
