Another uncommon feature that appears on the T300 is the ability to apply an unsharp mask to images.

Digital masking comes directly from masking procedures that have been around for more than a century with traditional methods. Digital can do it quicker, but traditional means are still fairly quick and effective.
Unsharp Masking
Despite the name it's a process designed to increase visual sharpness. Many cameras will apply some unsharp masking automatically.
Soft-Edge Masking
A technique used to isolate a portion of an image with an edge that allows for a smoother transition to areas around the masked part.
Spatial Resolution
The finest image portion that can be seen at any magnification.
Just give the masking frame a narrower setting. The enlargement is burned in longer in the area of the sky. The bleed on the left has also been increased to dramatize the effect. The low-speed film even leaves room for extreme bleeds.
Cut a strip of masking tape that is approximately 12 inches long. Connect the two 12 inch ends of the cardboard. You now have built the body of the gun.

A useful feature on contact printers is an adjustable masking device. This device is attached to the printer so it fits snugly over the printing glass. The mask consists of thin metal leaves used to "frame" the negative.

I learn something new in Photoshop every time I use it, and I now do a lot of masking and adjusting of separate areas and layers. I also use dodging and burning tools in the same way I used to do with black and white printing.
One of the most frequently-used yet most commonly misunderstood post-processing operations has to be "sharpening" -- technically "unsharp masking" or USM for short.
Additionally, masking off your light source so that you are only allowing light through your subject and not around it will also really help avoid flare and increase contrast. Black foam core works great for this.
Until Photoshop CS2, the best choice (confusing name aside) has been Unsharp Masking. Unsharp Masking is a powerful tool, but thanks to new algorithms and expanded controls, CS2's new Smart Sharpen filter produces even better results.
For those owning consumer digital cameras (not DSLRs), you can use 2-4 strips of those opaque masking tapes.
USM - Abbreviation for UnSharp Masking, a means of creating additional definition in the edge transition areas of an image in order to retain detail.
As long as your subject stays in the same position the exposure won't change. Use a small piece of masking tape on the floor to mark the spot where your subjects should be sitting or standing.

If an image looks soft, it can often be improved by sharpening, a process (technically called unsharp masking) that adds contrast along lines and edges.
To lightproof a darkroom, start by blocking any windows with black masking tape, aluminum foil and a blackout shade. Then hang a blackout shade in front of the door that extends to the floor and beyond the door's sides.

There are many other techniques illustrated in the book. Throughout Chapters 6, 7 and 8, you learn techniques like masking, retouching and sculpting.

I recommend experimenting with the unsharp masking controls a bit, starting at 100 for Amount, 0.3 for Radius, and 0-3 for Threshold. First, increase the Amount setting, then increase the radius by 1/10 point at time.
