Matrix Metering with Digital
About 18 months ago, I wrote about the problems that come with matrix metering. By evaluating multiple segments of a scene and making exposure decisions for you, matrix steals a degree of control from you.

Matrix metering evaluates multiple segments of a scene to determine the best exposure by essentially splitting the scene into sections, evaluating either 420-segments or 1,005 segments, depending on the Nikon D-SLR in use.

Matrix Metering
Multi-segment metering (originally devised by Nikon for its FA SLR of 1983 under the name AMP: Automatic Multi-Pattern metering). Matrix was introduced to the world in 1988 with the Nikon F4.

Matrix metering on Nikon camera's is called either Pattern or Evaluative on other models.
Most brands all name the second mode, Center-weighted metering or very close to it.

Matrix metering is used in virtually all digital cameras for the simple reason that it is the most reliable and sophisticated type of in-camera metering.

Matrix Metering system
An exposure metering system using a multi-segment sensor and computer. Available in some Nikon SLRs.

Matrix Metering. An exposure system that breaks the scene up into a grid and evaluates each section to determine the exposure.
Megapixel. An image or image sensor with over one million pixels.

Matrix metering
Matrix metering, and derivations of it, works by splitting the frame into sections and takes each of these into account. This is more accurate than centre weighted.

MATRIX METERING- When a digital camera has to set the exposure automatically (the aperture and shutter speed) it often uses matrix metering.

Matrix Metering
A metering method which uses the entire image; however, it breaks the area down into smaller segments and uses the individual readings to calculate the best possible exposure.

Matrix Metering. Most digicams have a matrix metering option which uses 256 areas of the frame to calculate the best overall exposure value.

Matrix metering - In most digicams there is a matrix metering option which uses 256 areas of the frame to calculate the best overall exposure value.

3D Matrix Metering with 10-segment SPD

Selects 3D matrix metering which uses a 10 segment sensor to calculate the best exposure for the frame. Use D or G type lenses with 3D Matrix Metering for the optimum metering.

Matrix Metering
Also known as Segmented Metering, Matrix metering takes the total image area and breaks it into sections, which are analyzed by the camera's light meter and compared to the light values of the surrounding sections.

Matrix Metering
Many cameras use a matrix metering method where the meter up to 256 sectors of the frame to obtain an ultimate exposure.

I use matrix metering for wide angle, and center-weighted for macro. If you are shooting with your strobes on manual, this will have no effect.

Also called: matrix metering or segmented metering. This type of system takes a light reading from many different ares of the frame.

Evaluative metering - also called Matrix Metering - depends on complex algorithmic calculations performed by your camera's computer chip.

and technical innovations made 35 mm camera systems more versatile and sophisticated by adding more advanced light metering capabilities such as spot-metering; limited area metering such as used by Canon with the F1 series; matrix metering as used by ...

The following illustation provides an impression about the way modern matrix metering systems work.

I don't think most of us need cameras with 10 frames per second film advance, color matrix metering, 1/12000 sec shutter speeds, or power zooming. These features in my opinion are just competition among camera manufacturers.

Nikon's i-TTL wireless flash system employs pulsed modulated light for triggering the slaves in its Speedlights using either the 5-segment TTL flash sensor or and RGB sensor which, along with data from the 1005-pixel Color Matrix Metering system, ...

Actually that in Auto, P,S and A modes when 3-D matrix metering is used, the camera will override flash compensation settings and do what it thinks is best.

Besides the above two light metering options, each camera manufacturer has its own variations, such as Matrix Metering, Multi-Pattern Metering, etc.

I would be very interested in an article covering spot/center/matrix metering.

I knew the sun wouldn’t be a major factor in that matrix metering algorithms are programmed to ignore specular points of light. Just to be safe, I set the camera to a three stop bracket of 1 stop under / on / 1 stop over.

Popular modes include center-weighted metering (an average of the frame, with emphasis on the center of the image), spot metering (generally 1 to 3 percent of the image), and evaluative or matrix metering (an average of independent areas of the ...

For instance, many photographers prefer to leave their cameras in Aperture priority, with evaluative/matrix metering and one shot autofocus. Get into the habit of returning your camera to the default when you put it down.
