Megapixels are only one aspect of the equation: sensors play a big part.
Since so many consumers don't understand megapixels, manufacturers often skimp to offer more of them.

Megapixel
Megapixel, one million pixels, refers to the number of dots in a digital cameras and other digital displays. The megapixel measurement reflects the ratio of individual pixels in a screen as it is divided by one million.

Megapixel Ratings
At five megapixels, image quality is close to that of film.

Techniques Glossary Megapixel
Used to describe a digital camera that has a CCD that delivers more than one million pixels.

1 megapixel or less: Cameras in this range (e.g. web cameras or cell phone cameras) have very low image resolution. Don't expect to be able to print high-quality photos using these cameras.

A high MegaPixel count comes in handy when you want to crop pictures, and when you want to make enlargements. For uncropped 4x6 prints, 2 megapixels are usually enough, but for 5x7s and 8x6s, you kinda need to go up to 3 if you want a sharp picture.

HOW MANY MEGAPIXELS?

A megapixel refers to one million pixels. The amount of detail that the camera can capture is called the resolution, and it is measured in pixels.

Megapixels:
At this point, we recommend purchasing a camera that is capable of capturing images of three million pixels (that's three megapixels) or more.

Megapixel and Resolution
In the world of digital photography, the resolution refers to the clarity of the image.

Megapixel
Digital photos are comprised of pixels. One megapixel is equivalent to one million pixels. Today's cameras are available in one to six megapixel resolution formats.

Megapixel
A unit equal to one million pixels. The higher the resolution, the more pixels in an image and therefore the greater the image quality.

Megapixels - A Megapixel means ‘one million pixels’ (see entry in our photograpgy dictionary). Thus a photo with a four Megapixel resolution (4MP) has four million pixels in it.

Megapixel - A measure of resolution of a digital camera. 1 Megapixel is 1 million pixels. This can also describe the number of sensor elements in a digital camera.
