Metering modes
Cameras and exposure meters can take readings of the light levels in a number of ways, from basic to advanced methods. The most basic is Centre-weighted (CW) or average metering that takes a measurement from most of the image area.

Metering Off of Wrong Spot in Composition
Metering is what it is called when you take a reading with your light meter.

Spot metering allows you to meter the subject in the center of the frame (or on some cameras at the selected AF point). Only a small area of the whole frame is metered and the exposure of the rest of the frame is ignored.

-Hydrometer. reading is taken at the point where the top of the meniscus intersects the stem of the hydrometer (fig. 9-2). pH METERS The acid or alkali state of a solution is measured in pH values.

Metering Opations: Reflected Light Readings
A typical handheld exposure meter actually provides you with two ways to meter. First, there’s reflected-light, or reflectance, measurement.

Techniques Glossary Metering modes
Cameras and exposure meters can take readings of the light levels in a number of ways, from basic to advanced methods.

Metering modes
Lightmeters in modern (digital) cameras are intelligent enough to automatically determine the correct exposure
for most shots so the photographer can concentrate on composing the image.

Metering modes allow you to control what part of a scene the meter will take its reading from—a useful capability when it comes to getting good exposure in difficult lighting situations.

Metering in the Camera
Hopefully that's all pretty straightforward. If you're confused by all the explanation, the three images above tell you everything you need to know.

Nanometer
Is a unit of measurement of light wavelength. A nanometer is one millionth of a millimeter.

Spot Metering
Spot metering measures only a small area in the center of the frame. Typically, this area is a spot that's only about two or three percent of the entire area of the picture (hence the term 'spot' metering).

What metering modes are available on digital SLR cameras
The majority of digital SLR cameras will give you a choice of at least three different metering systems. The names of the modes will differ depending on your camera model.

Light Meter
Light Meter is a handheld tool that photographers use to measure the light intensity in a given scene.

Light Meters
Types
There are two general types of meters: incident, which measures the light falling on the subject, and reflective, which measures the light reflected from the subject. Both measure light, they just do it differently.

Matrix Metering with Digital
About 18 months ago, I wrote about the problems that come with matrix metering. By evaluating multiple segments of a scene and making exposure decisions for you, matrix steals a degree of control from you.

Metering and Middle Gray
Your autoexposure system can't think. It is designed to do only one thing.

Metering is averaged over the entire scene with emphasis placed on the center area (typically 75% center - marked dark gray and black in the icon, 25% outside).

Meter what matters most. If you are photographing a scene that has a high dynamic range of more than 8 or 9 "stops" of exposure difference between the lightest and darkest area, it may exceed the exposure latitude of your film or digital sensor.

All meters are designed to produce middletone results. Middletone is neither black nor white, its neither light nor dark. It is half way in between. Green grass, blue sky, tree trunks for example are all middletone.

The metering mode selected on a digital camera decides how the camera's exposure sensor will react when a photo is taken. Different metering modes determine how much light is needed and how long the shutter remains open.

This meter is incredibly easy to use, once one masters the settings sequence. I added the radio transmitter unit to trigger my strobes and now the this is twice as useful as before.

Matrix metering evaluates multiple segments of a scene to determine the best exposure by essentially splitting the scene into sections, evaluating either 420-segments or 1,005 segments, depending on the Nikon D-SLR in use.

The spot metering mode concentrates taking light level readings from the very center of the frame and ignores the rest of the frame. In spot mode, a dot appears in the viewfinder and the camera will take a reading from whatever you place this dot on.

How do you meter a sunset? Or a flag backlit by the sun? Or a very dark-skinned subject? Or any other "tricky" exposure situation?

The limitations of metering
When pointed at subject, reflected light meters, whether in-camera or handheld, are calibrated to give an accurate exposure with reflectivity somewhere around 18%; the exact value varies and the details are complex, ...

Metering
The term "Metering" is used to describe the process of measuring the light in a given scene and reading an exposure value so that you can set an effective exposure.

Metering - Measuring light in the scene to set optimal exposure using a light meter or doing it manually or by eye.
Micro Drive - This is a small hard drive that is compatible with a Type II Compact Flash slot in digital cameras.

An instrument with a light-sensitive cell that measures the light reflected from or falling onto a subject. Some types can also measure Flash light.

Meter
Most modern DSLR cameras are capable of determining the perfect exposure for a shot. They are able to see what you see through the lens and automatically set the aperture and shutter speed on the camera to capture the image as it is seen.

Middle gray. A standard average gray tone of 18 percent reflectance. See Gray card.

Metering - The process of measuring the available light reflected from the subject to calculate the proper exposure time or aperture.

Metering
Digital SLRs have built-in light meters that calculate the required exposure settings to expose the object you're pointing the camera at as a medium tone.

Metering is slightly out.
It's possible you may have problems achieving completely accurate metering with your camera and manual lens.

Metering system
A function for measuring the brightness (light). You may wish to select a different metering system, depending on the size of the area in which the light is measured.

Short for Manual Focus.

TTL METER - A light meter that measures light travelling through the lens.

Spot metering
As the name implies, the meter cell reads only the light from a very small part of the frame.

SPOT METERING- Spot metering for exposure is a method used in some SLRs and some digital cameras as well. It works like this:
There is an area marked in the optical viewfinder in the center of the image.

Spot Metering. Autoexposure is based on a meter reading of a small circle in the center of the viewfinder.

Spot Metering takes its light measurement only from a small central spot of the screen.
Different cameras have different light metering schemes, but they are mostly variants of the three basic ones above.

Also called a light meter, this is an instrument used to measure luminous intensity, luminous flux, illumination, or intensity of light.

Spot Metering. The camera's auto exposure system is focused on a very small area in the centre of the viewfinder to adjust the overall exposure value just for that area.

Spot metering. An exposure calculation system that emphasizes a small portion of the image area, usually in the center of the frame. Some cameras let you move the 'spot' to other portions of the image area.

Light meter: A light meter is a device used to measure the amount of light. In photography, a light meter is often used to determine the proper exposure for a photograph.
