Metering modes
Cameras and exposure meters can take readings of the light levels in a number of ways, from basic to advanced methods. The most basic is Centre-weighted (CW) or average metering that takes a measurement from most of the image area.

Metering is what it is called when you take a reading with your light meter.
Spot metering allows you to meter the subject in the center of the frame (or on some cameras at the selected AF point). Only a small area of the whole frame is metered and the exposure of the rest of the frame is ignored.

Let's move on to discuss Metering Modes. The metering Mode determines which part of the frame the light meter is reading and how the meter is going to calculate "correct" exposure.

for most shots so the photographer can concentrate on composing the image.

Metering modes allow you to control what part of a scene the meter will take its reading from—a useful capability when it comes to getting good exposure in difficult lighting situations.
Spot Metering
Spot metering measures only a small area in the center of the frame. Typically, this area is a spot that's only about two or three percent of the entire area of the picture (hence the term 'spot' metering).
What metering modes are available on digital SLR cameras
The majority of digital SLR cameras will give you a choice of at least three different metering systems. The names of the modes will differ depending on your camera model.

Metering and Middle Gray
Your autoexposure system can't think. It is designed to do only one thing.
Metering is averaged over the entire scene with emphasis placed on the center area (typically 75% center - marked dark gray and black in the icon, 25% outside).
The metering mode selected on a digital camera decides how the camera's exposure sensor will react when a photo is taken. Different metering modes determine how much light is needed and how long the shutter remains open.
Matrix metering evaluates multiple segments of a scene to determine the best exposure by essentially splitting the scene into sections, evaluating either 420-segments or 1,005 segments, depending on the Nikon D-SLR in use.
The spot metering mode concentrates taking light level readings from the very center of the frame and ignores the rest of the frame. In spot mode, a dot appears in the viewfinder and the camera will take a reading from whatever you place this dot on.
The limitations of metering
When pointed at subject, reflected light meters, whether in-camera or handheld, are calibrated to give an accurate exposure with reflectivity somewhere around 18%; the exact value varies and the details are complex, ...
While metering, just make sure the card is tilted so that the light that falls on it is similar to the light that is falling on your subject.

A typical handheld exposure meter actually provides you with two ways to meter. First, there’s reflected-light, or reflectance, measurement.

There are several metering modes available depending on the camera model. Among them are centerweighted, spot (*), multisegment, and other types of metering. All types of meters are made to give a middle tone result.

Through The Lens metering. The basic method for determining photographic exposure is to measure the intensity of the ambient lighting and choose camera settings accordingly. It can apply to both flash and ambient light readings.

Spot metering
As the name implies, the meter cell reads only the light from a very small part of the frame.
SPOT METERING- Spot metering for exposure is a method used in some SLRs and some digital cameras as well. It works like this:
There is an area marked in the optical viewfinder in the center of the image.
Spot Metering. Autoexposure is based on a meter reading of a small circle in the center of the viewfinder.
Spot Metering takes its light measurement only from a small central spot of the screen.
Different cameras have different light metering schemes, but they are mostly variants of the three basic ones above.
Spot Metering. The camera's auto exposure system is focused on a very small area in the centre of the viewfinder to adjust the overall exposure value just for that area.
Spot metering. An exposure calculation system that emphasizes a small portion of the image area, usually in the center of the frame. Some cameras let you move the 'spot' to other portions of the image area.
Light metering
I use matrix metering for wide angle, and center-weighted for macro. If you are shooting with your strobes on manual, this will have no effect.

Spot metering allows for the measurement of smaller areas of the total picture area.
Matrix Metering
Multi-segment metering (originally devised by Nikon for its FA SLR of 1983 under the name AMP: Automatic Multi-Pattern metering). Matrix was introduced to the world in 1988 with the Nikon F4.

Metering light can take occur in two different manners, either reflective or incident. As the name suggests, reflective light metering works by measuring light as it is reflected off of the main subject.
Metering can sometimes prove difficult. This is because there is usually a large disparity between the light and dark areas within the frame.

The metering system, with a few clever refinements, measures the light in a scene and tries to take an average of all the tones.

Spot metering
This type of metering uses only a small central spot of the frame to measure the light coming off the subject. The measuring spot is often indicated in the viewfinder of the camera.
Spot metering off the black bear and the little bit of green foliage (red insert area) caused a little overexposed for the overall content but I got lucky as the slight overexposure brought out a little more detail in the black bear.
When metering your shot, point your camera at a darker part of the scene, set the meter, then move your viewfinder to capture the image you seek.
