Mid tones
An area of medium brightness, neither a very dark shadow not a very bright highlight. A medium gray tone in a print.

In color photography, people often expose for the mid tones. They may take a meter reading off a gray card, or they may find a mid tone object in the image and meter off that.
Look at your picture and you will notice that the mid tones of your picture are getting lighter giving you a brighter looking picture. Pull to the right and downwards and you will see the mid tones getting darker.
In this example I've simply darkened the mid tones (to give the bricks a darker, more realistic look) and also applied an Unsharpen Mask (0.5 pixel radius, 73%).

Using plain sharpen filters will make the smooth mid tones in your image look a bit grainy. You will want to experiment a bit to get the effect you are looking for.
From basic adjustments in shadows, highlights and mid tones, to sophisticated adjustments at any point within a 256 (from 0 to 255) tonal range of the entire image or precise adjustments to the individual color channels of an image.
Films such as Fuji Velvia exhibit exaggerated contrast and have a fairly steep response curve in the mid tones. On the other hand, films like Fuji Astia have flatter response curves.

As a result on the right hand side of the histogram you can see a sudden rise. While there are quite a few mid tones - everything is skewed right and with the extreme values on the right hand side indicate an over exposed shot.
I had to expose the original file to hang onto highlight detail which made the mid tones a little darker than I wanted them. I knew I could bring them up a little in editing, using Nikon Capture NX2.
Bright highlights in one part of the frame may be balanced by dark shadows in other areas, as well as mid tones that fall between the extremes, and the overall average may be that medium gray that the meter thinks it's looking at.
