A tone that appears between a scene's highlight and shadow areas.

 


MIDTONE - Area of an image or a scene that displays average tonal values.
MID-ROLL REWIND - Feature on some cameras that permits the film to be rewound before the final frame is exposed.

Midtones - Those portions of an image with a value between black and white, usually in the 25 percent to 75 percent range.

Midtone. An area of medium brightness, neither a very dark shadow nor a very bright highlight.

Midtones. Parts of an image with tones of an intermediate value, usually in the 25-75 percent range. Many image editing features allow you to manipulate midtones independently from the highlights and shadows.

Midtones: Tonal values of an original or reproduction that fall midway between the highlight and shadow tones.
Mil: One one-thousandth (1/1000) of an inch; used to describe paper and tape thickness.

Adjust Midtones. Now you want to make the overall photo look bright or dark enough, whatever is appropriate to your subject, by adjusting the midtones.

Midtone Contrast: Figure 16 shows a curve that increases the midtone contrast of the image. This is commonly referred to as an S curve and is very popular. This curve is created by placing one point at the middle of the curve in order to anchor it.

With Curves (or the Tone Curve in Camera Raw and Lightroom), you can smoothly and effectively brighten an image so that the blacks are retained, yet the tones that have detail are revealed.

Middle tone/Midtone is the middle gray in the pure white to pure black tone scale. Midtone also refers to the range of colors that aren't mixed with black (the shadows) or white (the highlights).

"Snap Neutral Midtones" tells Photoshop to locate an average color that is nearly neutral which it will then adjust to be truly neutral.

If we wanted to 'cool off' this image a bit, we could adjust the midtone slider of the BLUE channel histogram to the left to shift the blue pixels that are between 0 and 255 up (to the right) to higher tonal numbers.

Gamma: The monitor's gamma controls the tone response curve of the monitor, or, to put it more simply, the contrast through the midtones. For both Mac and Window users, I recommend starting with the Gamma 2.2 setting.

All modern cameras use 18% grey midtone as the starting point for deciding upon exposure. The level of 18% grey approximates to Zone V. But meters don’t record precise values, only relative ones.

A histogram can show if there is enough detail in shadow, midtone and highlight areas of an image. An image that uses the entire dynamic range of the camera will have a reasonable number of pixels spread out over all levels of brightness.

A measure of the brightness and contrast of a monitor or the midtone brightness of digital image. Adjusting the Gamma slider within an image-editing program will adjust the midtones while maintaining detail in the highlight and shadow areas.

Brightness - this adjusts image brightness, mainly affecting midtones.
Contrast - when you increase contrast, the middle-to-dark image areas become darker, and the middle-to-light image areas become lighter and vise versa.

The Brightness slider is equivalent to the midpoint slider in levels and sets midtone brightness. If you push it up too far you can start to affect the exposure setting and you’ll start blowing out highlights.

For the midtones move the midtone input slider to the left to lower the contrast and to the right to increase the contrast. Ignore the midtone eye dropper. Click on the OK button to complete the procedure and then save the image.

One reason to check a histogram is to see if there are enough pixels in the shadow, midtone, and highlight areas. If there are enough, even if the image is somewhat off, it can be corrected in a program such as Photoshop using the Levels command.

Some of the issues we encountered with the F30 have been addressed - the exposure seems more reliable and the tone curve no longer produces that strange 'flat midtones' effect.

That means you have to move the Midtones slide somewhere to the 3/4 (closer to the right) However some of your images could be overexposed (already too bright). Move the slider close to the left, make it darker.

Select Midtones and click twice on Increase Red. The more clicks you make, the more the colour cast will increase.

Photoshop also allows a photographer to access and adjust midtone variations of color.

By appropriate reduction of the enlarger exposure, the window can be made to correspond to the midtone regions of the original scene, and further reduction of the enlarger exposure can move the window into the shadow regions.

In the main or Adjust tab for the Photoshop CS2 RAW converter, you have separate sliders to correct the highlights, shadows, and midtones. That does not mean you can just ignore exposure when you shoot.

Gamma
The contrast affecting the mid-level grays or midtones of an image. Adjusting the gamma of an image allows you to change brightness values of the middle range of gray tones without dramatically altering the shadows and highlights.

You can easily target a subject tone, taking readings of a key highlight, key shadow value, or midtone value.

Other Adjustments
Experiment with moving the midtone and shadow sliders, since you have your originals backed up you can always start again.

Step 3: Levels - The face was still a bit dark so I made a selection around it, went to levels and dragged the midtone slider until it was a touch brighter. At this time, I also lightened up the whites of the eyes and teeth using the dodge tool.

Midtone: Area of brightness midway between shadows and highlights.
Mirror lens: Lens that uses mirrors within its construction. This allows long focal length lens to fit within a short barrel. Their design requires a fix aperture.

Put simply, the points on the left of the histogram represent shadows, the points in the middle of the graph are midtones while the values to the right are the highlights.

Gamma curve is used to describe a curve (sometimes called a tone reproduction curve - TRC) that effects the relationship between the shadow, midtones, and highlights of an image or device.

Then boost midtone contrast and adjust the black level a bit higher.
I often use this as a "mild" HDR technique for those images that don't need as much adjustemt. You can make it into a lightroom preset and automate.

Just squeeze the highlight and shadow sliders closer together to add some nice punch to the image. Curves is good method for midtone contrast.

You don't want to meter the subject, or that would bring out more detail. Try to find a midtone area, such as the moderate shadows, or use a gray card, which is a simple piece of cardstock that has average "reflectivity." ...

Does this mean you should routinely underexpose your digital images? No. I think the best approach is still to base your exposure around the highlights and midtones.

It measures the reflectance of the scene with the preflash, then calculates proper flash output to achieve a midtoned subject, based on that data. It uses a preflash, but doesn't suffer from A-TTL's drawbacks for two reasons.
