Mirror lens
This is technically known as a catadioptric lens and has an unusual construction of mirrors and lens elements. As well as glass elements there are mirrors at the front and rear to fold the light as it enters the lens.

Typically Mirror lenses are quite slow so you may live with the limitation of a fixed aperture.

This is technically known as a catadioptric lens and has an unusual construction of mirrors and lens elements.

-Out-of-focus highlights caused by a mirror lens. mirror lens element at the center of the front glass plate. In turn, the mirror lens reflects the light back through a hole in the concave mirror to a focus on the film.

MIRROR LENS - Lens with an internal mirror or mirrors that are usually curved, enabling comparatively-light lenses that are shorter than similarly-designated long focus lenses.

Lens in which some (usually two) of the elements are curved mirrors. This construction produces comparatively lightweight short fat long focus lenses. They cannot be fitted with a normal diaphragm.

Mirror lenses
Mirror, or catadioptric lenses are an alternative to more expensive long lenses. They have two major draw backs. First they are too slow. 500mm and 600mm ones have a maximum aperture of f-8 and it's fixed. You can't change f-stops.

Mirror lens is a lens system which uses mirrors within its internal construction. Most lenses of this type have a mixture of reflecting and refracting optics and are known as catadioptric lenses.

What about mirror lenses? I can get a really cheap telephoto that way! ...

Bokeh characteristics may be quantified by examining the image's circle of confusion. In out-of-focus areas, each point of light becomes a disc.

You can buy a cheap manual focus mirror lens like a 500mm or a 1000mm and all you need is a tripod. That's it!

Simply adhere a black paper disk to the center of a skylight filter and put it on your telephoto. You'll get the mirror lens look at zero extra cost. See the before an after shots here in these photos! ...
