A light that is positioned close to an electronic flash so you can roughly preview the effect of the flash before taking a photo. Usually supplied with studio flash although a few on-camera guns have a strobe to assist.

Provided you have a not too powerful modelling light or small torch (many night active creatures shun bright light) you can easily frame your subject and shoot knowing you are correctly composed and in focus.
There are modelling lights to some flash units. Maybe the manufacturers can get a Flash/LED unit together. maybe there are some & I just have not seen one yet. Then everyone will be happy. Are you receiving Royalties from someone?
Combining soft effect and warm sepia tones with hard, one-side "drawing" light with silver lightdisk at opposite side, and one-side back modelling light will produce romantic pictures, styled like 20's of XX century.
great outdoor portraits using just the built-in flash. One way is to use a bright sunlit wall as a main light source. Another is to use the sun as a backlight and a dark wall as a light blocker so that ambient daylight becomes the modelling light.
