If your monitor is calibrated properly you should see sixteen distinct tones from white to black.

On color monitors, each pixel is actually composed of three dots -- a red, a blue, and a green one. Ideally, the three dots should all converge at the same point, but all monitors have some convergence error that can make color pixels appear fuzzy.

The Nikon D5100 also gets the company's EXPEED 2 engine, along with a vari-angle 3-inch monitor and 4fps continuous shooting.
It's also smaller and lighter than the D5000 it replaces, despite borrowing the CMOS sensor from Nikon's D7000.

This is because phosphors used in monitors are non-linear and make darker colors appear less dark and lighter colors extra bright. To prevent this the signal is electronically adjusted to counteract this effect.

When you display a digital image on a monitor, the only thing that determines the size of the image is the pixel count and aspect ratio. DPI and PPI (and I'll explain them later) mean absolutely nothing.

Establish ways to monitor performance and provide feedback. Periodically, meet together to discuss ways to improve on the project. There should be some metrics by which you can monitor your progress.
