MONITOR CALIBRATION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY
Knowing how to calibrate your monitor is critical for any photographer who wants accurate and predictable photographic prints.

But more than the bare minimum-which is what monitor calibration should be considered-I'm able to go the extra mile and use my inexpensive profiling system to calibrate my scanner, my printer, my laptop-any device that my photos will ever encounter.

Most serious photographers spend plenty on their gear but try to skimp in other areas to save money. Monitor calibration is one of those areas.

The purpose of calibrating your monitor is to compensate for any color and tone inaccuracies caused by the construction of the monitor or the interaction of the monitor with the video card in your computer.

In order to produce digital images that will print with colors and a tonal range that approximate what you see on your monitor, you'll need to do a basic monitor calibration.

Solution: Get a monitor calibration kit and use it.
Monitor calibration kits include a colorimeter or tristimulus device that gets mounted on your monitor, plus wizard-driven software to allow you to easily and efficiently calibrate your monitor.

I tried the free Monitor Calibration Wizard from Hex2Bit, but it gave me very poor results. I don't recommend it at all. I also looked at the Eye-One Display system from GretagMacbeth.

Pantone sells the new $89 "huey" (sic) monitor calibration system. The system is made by GretagMacbeth. It is similar to the Colorvision calibrator I use and ads the nifty feature of adjusting the calibration to changing ambient light.

We quickly ruled out some common problems with monitor calibration and printing. Color Management is a tricky process. I am far from being an expert despite a working knowledge.

That way you can make good judgments when you’re enhancing your images in the digital darkroom. Monitor calibration really needs to be done with a dedicated hardware-software package, not the eyeball and slider approach.
