The following pictures don't show any significant color differences - they're quite "monochromatic". The effect on us is often a bit weird because we don't have any anchors in the image where we could start to analyse it.

Monochromatic
A subject or image consisting of only one color in addition to any black, white, and gray tones. Tip: The subtlety of the effect can be surprisingly powerful.
Monochromatic are light rays of a single wavelength.
Monochrome is single colored. It is most frequently applied to black and white photographs, but can also describe sepia and other toned images.
A monochromatic digital image file with pixel values that use shades of gray to represent tonal information. The term grayscale is often used to describe a digital black and white photograph.

An image could be considered to be monochromatic if it uses hues constrained within 30 degrees or less from one another. Analogous hues are within 60 degrees of one another. Complementary hues are 180 degrees apart.
Noise in digital images is most visible in uniform surfaces (such as blue skies and shadows) as monochromatic grain, similar to film grain (luminance noise) and/or as colored waves (color noise). As mentioned earlier, noise increases with temperature.
All of the above are so called "monochromatic" aberrations, i.e. they exist even for light of a single color. Real light is polychromatic, i.e. made up of many colors which results in a sixth aberration, Chromatic Aberration .

But if you look at the photo below of a near-monochromatic (single color) light projected through a camera lens at F/5.6 you'll see the diffraction rings that can take the edge off an otherwise sharp photo.
Sepia Toning, like grayscale, refers to a monochromatic basis of color for a photograph. Rather than being based on a black and white color scale, sepia toning relies on a brown scale.
On the other hand, you are unlikely to screw up and leave something distracting in the frame if you confine yourself to using seamless paper or other monochromatic backgrounds. You don't have to build a special room to have a controlled background.
Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Select Uniform, check the box for Monochromatic, and use an amount around 4% to 6%. Finally, to neutralize the strong color cast, create a B&W Adjustment layer and lower opacity to 50%.

This type of film is much less widely used now (especially because there are monochromatic C41 films that go through standard color processing, but produce black and white images).
Infrared Infrared film is an entirely different film.
You can actually preview exposure on the LCD panel in color or monochromatically when shooting black-and-white. If this works the way Contax claims, we have an excellent tool to solve exposure problems.
