Motion JPEG, MPEG or AVCHD?
The majority of digital cameras still use motion JPEG to capture video, as they have for many years. As the name implies, M-JPEG is unusual in video terms as it compresses each frame individually as a JPEG image.

 


Motion JPEG. A video clip composed of a sequence of JPEG compressed images. Sometimes abbreviated to MPEG (see MPEG below), although they are slightly different.

Another Sony Motion JPEG movie file format that was for its 2003 Sony digicams. Its specs include VGA resolution (640x480) at 16fps, with audio. Like PEG-EX, the length of a video sequence is only limited by the available storage capacity.

JPEG compression is defined only for still-image compression, although a number of variants referred to as "motion JPEG" are used in digital videography. JointPhotographicExperts Group (the committee that established the baseline algorithms), .jpg. .

A few frames support common video formats such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, Motion JPEG, AVI, 3GP (video phone format) and the audio formats MP3 and WMA. Some frames have limits on file sizes and none support any of the existing RAW formats.

Motion JPEG movie file. MPEG1 was the original format used in CDRoms and VideoCDs. MPEG2 is now the standard for DVD movies. Also see 'Top Tutors' / File Formats / Video Formats.

Formats for movies are AVI, DV, MPEG, MOV (often containing motion JPEG), WMV, and ASF (basically the same as WMV).
