Use your camera's neck strap. Many a film and digital camera have been damaged or destroyed crashing to the ground. If your camera came with a neck-strap make sure your use it, especially when changing lenses with a digital SLR.

I didn't have the neck strap done up properly and it fell off my neck. I took it to the camera hospital (Black's Photography) and luckily, the camera was okay after they checked it out.

Pull both dangling strings on one end of the neck strap and push them through the plastic strap holder on one side of your camera. Tie them together in a tight knot at the end.
(Also a note to the previous commentor re: the OpTech neck strap. I have one too, and have carted it through several countries.

TLRs are also ideal for "candid camera" shots where an eye-level camera would be conspicuous. A TLR can be hung on a neck strap and the shutter fired by cable release.
