Restoring Nikon NEF Thumbnails Under Windows XP Service Pack 2
Windows XP has a lot of nice features for digital photographers.
NEF - Nikon Electronic Format. Nikon's proprietary RAW image file format, sometimes shown as NEF (Raw).
NEF - Raw image data file format used by the Nikon D1, D1x, D1h, D100 pro SLR and Coolpix 5700 digicams. NEF means Nikon Electronic Format.

The NEF file is composed of raw image data, a thumbnail and an Instruction Set. Combined, these elements provide extensive image-editing capability.

About the Images:
The FALSE information was posted on the D1List that the NEFs linked to the images were actually TIFFs. They are in fact NEFs straight from the camera (although with some IPTC data added for copyright).
My feeling is that with a perfectly exposed file, it may not matter too much whether you open the RAW file in Photoshop or some other software like Nikon Capture for NEF files, or Digital Photo Professional or Capture One for Canon CR2 files.
Canon calls their version of this "RAW", Nikon call it "NEF". These files are usually (but not always) compressed, but in a non-lossy manner. They are significantly smaller than equivalent TIFF files, but larger than JPEGs.
For the ultimate in flexibility, image files can be recorded in TIFF, JPEG, or NEF (Nikon's proprietary RAW format), in either 12-bit or 14-bit compressed or uncompressed formats. Low noise capture is possible at ISO settings as high as 6400.
NEF, Pentax files are .PEF, and Olympus uses .ORF. The DNG format (for "digital negative") was recently created by Adobe in an effort to unify the slightly different RAW formats created by the various manufacturers.

Many devices support common formats just as JPEG, but not proprietary formats such as Canon's RAW and Nikon's NEF format. Also, does it support your camera's movie format if it has one?
Photographers are performing image corrections on a processed file less frequently (JPEG, TIFF, PSD), making the bulk of image corrections on an unprocessed raw file (NEF, ORF, CR2).
Hence the loss is not exactly equal to the loss in bit scale (thats what I am reading from your Compressed NEF paragraph).
I think I can only get 5 or 6 NEF files and when taking pictures of a fast-moving object (like a 7month old) that's not enough. One might wonder why I only have a 32meg card; I'm too cheap to pay photo store prices for them.
The Nikon Raw (NEF) images are just over 9MB. I used exclusively Raw format when saving my pictures, as this would later allow me greater control when retouching the images.

Nickel Cadmium (aka Nicad), a type of rechargeable battery. Nicad was the original type of rechargeable battery.
For example, Canon uses the digital photography terminology "RAW", Nikon uses different digital photography terminology - "NEF". They are incompatible with each other. Whereas every computer can show JPEG images, RAW files need specific software.
