By rotating the flash head and pointing it at a reflective, neutral colored area, such as a white ceiling, you can bounce the light off a larger area, thereby softening the light which reaches the subject.

Most video and digital still cameras can adjust for color temperature by zooming into a white or neutral colored object and setting the manual "white balance" (telling the camera that "this object is white"); ...

Neutral colors, such as white, black, and the various tones or values of gray, actually absorb almost equal proportions of the colors of light. Varying reflective powers account for their differences.

The Snap Neutral Midtones identifies a near neutral color in the image and adjusts the gamma to make the color neutral. In most cases, it is best to leave this unchecked as this option can cause color shifts in an image.

For truly creative effects, Adobe Camera Raw lets you use an eyedropper to select an object in an image that should be neutral colored.

Mixing a primary color with its complementary color gives gray (a neutral color).

Our eyes almost instantaneously adjust the color of the light so that neutral colors (white, grey, black) appear neutral. This unconcious, automatic adjustment in our perception of color goes virtually unnoticed.

Black, white and grey are neutral colors and red is a primary color that is warm and bold. However, your model probably does not know a fraction of what you know about composition and light, so persuade the model to consider your options.
