NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargeable AA batteries are much better than the older NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) AAs. They have no "memory effect" (explained below) and are more than twice as powerful.
NiMH batteries are only good for 100-300 charges, and deep discharges definitely wear on the battery. So don't discharge any more often than you think you need to to maintain battery life.

It tests NiMH, lithium and alkaline batteries. In alkaline, it tests, 9V, N, AAA, AA, C, and D cells. It tests 3V lithium cells, like the CR123, CR2 and CRV3, and all single-cell Ni-MH.

A popular place to get batteries and chargers. I ordered a charger and two sets of NiMH AA bateries for my Fuji FinePix 1300. Haven't had any problems.
NOTE: The performance of all batteries will decrease as the temperature drops. For best performance in cold environments, use Lithium AA batteries. NiMH batteries may also provide acceptable low temperature performance.
Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are very efficient and offer about 40% more capacity than NiCD plus they don't suffer from memory effect. However they only last 500 charge and discharge cycles. NiMH batteries lose about 3% of their charge daily.
Using AA Nimh rechargeable batteries I get over 300 full power shots with a two-second recycle time. I end up using them at half power most of the time where there’s no recycle time; you just fire as fast as you can.
