NiMH batteries

NiMH batteries are only good for 100-300 charges, and deep discharges definitely wear on the battery. So don't discharge any more often than you think you need to to maintain battery life.

NiMH batteries don't have the ‘memory' problems that NiCads do, but they will suffer ‘voltage depression' if they are not occasionally fully discharged.

NiMH batteries - Rechargeable Nickel metal hydride batteries can store up to 50 percent more power than NiCad batteries, making them ideal for digital cameras.

Since many digicams consume some power even when switched off, recharge NiMh batteries about once a month during long periods of non-use. This will prevent damage through total discharge and ensure the camera's clock has a reliable current supply.

Over the last couple of years high capacity NiMH batteries have really developed, especially in the popular AA size which is what most all the digital cameras use.

Lithium-Ion batteries allow greater recording time than NiMh batteries. Not only will Lithium-Ion batteries hold a longer charge, they also have a longer shelf life, generally 5-7 years.

Li-ion (Lithium-ion) rechargeable batteries are lighter, more compact, but more expensive than NiMH batteries. They have no memory effect and always come in proprietary formats (there are no rechargeable Li-ion AAs).

Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries are rechargeable and are claimed to have no "memory" effect as do NiCds.

NOTE: The performance of all batteries will decrease as the temperature drops. For best performance in cold environments, use Lithium AA batteries. NiMH batteries may also provide acceptable low temperature performance.

Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are very efficient and offer about 40% more capacity than NiCD plus they don't suffer from memory effect. However they only last 500 charge and discharge cycles. NiMH batteries lose about 3% of their charge daily.

NIMH batteries do not provide as much power as lithium ion batteries, and they also tend to discharge when not used. They are available in various ampere-hour (Ah) or milli-ampere-hour (mAh) ratings, which affects how long they last in use.

They are rechargeable like Nicad batteries but they are safe to throw away in landfills. They also do not exhibit the "memory" effect that Nicad batteries have shown to exhibit. They need chargers that are specifically made for NiMH batteries.
