silver nitrate
a light sensitive compound that forms the base of all other silver compounds in photographic sensitizers.

-Silver nitrate - chemical combination of silver and nitric acid. It is used in intensifiers, physical developers and photographic emulsions manufacture.
-Silver reclamation - system for recovering silver from exhausted solutions.

Nitrate base was an early flexible film support which was highly inflammable.
Nitric acid is used in emulsion manufacture, in toners, and in bleaches, it is highly corrosive.

1800: Thomas Wedgwood makes "sun pictures" by placing opaque objects on leather treated with silver nitrate; resulting images deteriorated rapidly, however, if displayed under light stronger than from candles.

Toxic gases may be created when acid is mixed with such chemicals as sulfides, cyanides, nitrates, and nitrites. Diluting acids with water can generate considerable heat; acid should always be added to water, not water to acid.

The precipitate produced by dissolving elemental (metallic) silver in nitric acid produces silver nitrate (AGNO3). Silver nitrate can undergo further reactions to produce halides which are even more photo-sensitive.

To make a calotype, plain sheets of writing paper are coated with a solution of silver nitrate, dried, then dipped in potassium iodide to form silver iodide.

Paper is soaked with weak salt solution, then silver nitrate is brushed on, and the result is silver chloride. Finished prints have a beautiful delicacy in the lighter tones, but slightly lack in detail overall.

Dole describes the process, 'What you do is set up the camera, prepare a plate by flowing collodian onto the plate [which is an art form in itself], sensitize in a bath of silver nitrate, put the plate into a wooden holder, ...

FILM - A transparent cellulose nitrate or cellulose actetate composition made in thin, flexible strips or sheets and coated with a light-sensitive emulsion for taking photographs.

He found celluloid (cellulose nitrate) of which flexible transparent foils could be made. Contemporary film makers had already used celluloid plates as replacement for glass plates. The foil got coated with gelatine film emulsion.

In the early 1800's Angelo Sala observed that when silver nitrate powder is kept in the sun for long, it turns black. ...

Cyanotype is an early photographic process using potassium ferricyanide instead of silver nitrate. (Blueprints on Fabric uses potassium ferricyanide and ferric sal.t) This is what causes the blue color instead of the grey of silver.
