Opening up means to use a larger, or (depending on context), a relatively large aperture (small f/ number).
Wide open means to use the largest aperture (smallest f/number).

Opening up your RAW image in CS5 makes available several new control sliders: Luminance, Color, and Edge Detail. Move the Luminance slider to the right to remove grayscale (non-color) noise. Move the Color Slider to the right to remove Color noise.

Opening up is increasing the size of the lens aperture or decreasing the shutter speed to admit more light to the film.
Optical axis is an imaginary line passing horizontally through the center of a compound lens system.

By opening up your aperture as means of getting more light and a higher shutter speed, you have to sacrifice some depth of field.

Google is opening up its Docs hosted office productivity suite so that users can store any type of file in it, giving the popular software-as-a-service product an important online storage component.

Refers to the opening up and importing of files into a given software application or into the operating system. It is most often done through a twain interface or plug-in mini-application.

So let's begin by opening up the start photo and replacement sky in Photoshop. Duplicate the start photo by dragging it over the Create New Layer icon at the base of the Layers palette.

Raising the ISO and opening up the lens to let in more light are both designed to prevent the shutter speed from becoming too slow.

Opening up 3. Racking out 4. Sliding back You have changed the f/stop setting from f/16 to f/8. What amount of light is admitted to the film plane? 1. One half 2. Two times 3. One quarter 4.

The photography term we often see in photo magazine "opening up 1 F-stop, ...

Readjust the control by opening up the dialog box for Brightness/Contrast (double-click on the adjustment layer icon on the layer in the Layer palette) and changing the amount of darkening.

Opening up a lens by one stop allows twice as much light to fall on the film in a given period of time, therefore to have the same exposure at this larger aperture, as at the previous aperture, the shutter speed is set twice as fast (i.e.

For instance, a photographer may say that he doubled his exposure by opening up the lens by one stop. Since each stop equates to a doubling of light, the dynamic range in stops can easily be converted to a light ratio for those that prefer.

New scenery opening up like this can
create window-light framing for backgrounds. If the wrong weather rolls in covering a blue sky, consider shooting scenes that don't include it.

This opening up of perspective with wide-angles is called exaggerated perspective. A view appears much wider than our eyes would normally see it.
Telephotos show the opposite effect.

So, if you wish to use a fast shutter speed (perhaps to 'freeze' action) simply increase the rate of exposure (by opening up the aperture), and the shutter speed can be increased.

As we saw with the window blinds example, opening up our aperture allows more light to hit our sensor or film.

If you need a faster shutter speed and don't want to lose depth of field by opening up the aperture, increase the ISO and the shutter speed.

Here you can see where Andy was again holding the reflector, opening up the shadowed side slightly. The light was waaaay down by now. I positioned the family to form a pyramid composition and tried to stick with that.

The new generation of dSLR cameras include high-definition (HD) video, and this is opening up a whole new realm of creative possibilities to photographers. Digital SLRs are making it much easier for visual everyone to share cinematic stories.

Another example would be the case where the surrounding might be too dark, and the camera exposes for the lack of light by either opening up the aperture and/or using a slower shutter speed (assuming ISO is constant) with the result that the main ...

The purpose of flash is not so much to supply the light, as it is to reduce contrast by "opening up" shadow areas. Most entry level and "prosumer" DSLRs come with a built in flash, but an external flash will provide better results.

An Apple Store just opened up in North Coastal San Diego (Encinitas) last month, another is opening up in North Inland San Diego (Escondido) this month, and I even saw one in San Luis Obispo last week, right in the middle of town.

You can compensate by opening up the aperture (the opening that allows light into the camera) and using a higher ISO setting (measuring the film's sensitivity to light), but these changes also have their own tradeoffs.

DS: The volume is greater on the server-end and transmission end. [The digital techs] are opening up more bandwidth to get the photos moved faster; but from a camera and lens standpoint, it's no different from any other game.

The widest aperture which the diaphragm is capable of opening up to; it is engraved on the lens in this manner; 1: 1.4.

Andre, Thanks for the article. Do you have better results using this method than just opening up the single raw in Photomatix and letting it generate the pseudo hdr file. Then doing the Tone Mapping.

By opening up the aperture, he was able to brighten the exposure of all of the lights by 2/3 of a stop.

We expect the trend to continue opening up even greater opportunities for pros.
Beyond Street Photography
Even photographers who aren't documenting life after dark have embraced the aesthetic shift.

6 to f4 opens it up 1 stop, doubles the size of the aperture and so doubles the amount of light getting onto the film. This is referred to as "OPENING UP A STOP'. Going the other way from f4 to f5.

One last thing that is helpful to know about apertures is that the term "stopping down" refers to making the hole smaller, which as you now know, results in bigger numbers (f/11 is a smaller hole than f/4 for instance). "Opening up" then means making ...

By opening up your aperture to its widest, the effect is that of shallow depth of field, throwing everything into soft focus, except for your subject.

Maximum aperture
The widest aperture which the diaphragm is capable of opening up to; it is engraved on the lens in this manner; 1: 1.4.

Opening up the edited photo in Photoshop, I simply duplicated the background layer and changed the blend mode to Soft Light in order to make the photo a little more contrasty and vibrant (Screen Shot 6: Soft Light Blend, Editing Example 1.

It is specified in terms an f-stop value, which can at times be counterintuitive, because the area of the opening increases as the f-stop decreases. In photographer slang, the when someone says they are "stopping down" or "opening up" their lens, ...

The Ricoh's relatively small dimensions (for an APS-C sensor camera) mean that you're simply more likely to carry the camera with you and that it can be used with a mini-tripod, no doubt opening up a whole new range of photographic opportunities for ...

A general rule of thumb is to compensate for the brightness by opening up one or two stops or over-exposing, to let in more light. If your camera has automatic exposure compensation try both a +1 and +2 and see which works best.

They are useful for taking photos of things which change over time, such as flowers opening up or the sun setting in the sky.
