Output resolution being the resolution of the final image
As you can see the EOS-1D's sensor is larger than an APS-C size negative and that despite the additional resolution the pixel size is approximately the same as the Nikon D1.

Review Notes ...

Also, while there are other times to sharpen, the bulk of sharpening is best done at final output resolution so do all your editing including resizing for print or web before sharpening.

I think it is fairly easy to see that with the same FOV and same output resolution pixel density doesn't really effect the amount of detail in the two 8mp camera images. See the 20D and 1D Mark II full resolution crops of the bear's nose below.

DPI - Dots per Inch. A measurement value used to describe either the resolution of a display screen or the output resolution of a printer.

The term is also used to describe the individual elements that make up a digital picture file, as well as the output resolutions of a computer monitor or a digital projector.

I took a small section from the center and enlarged it to equivalent 30x12 size, with the resulting print being about 4x6. The test file was 113dpi at output resolution, much lower than I usually like to go.
